About Oban
I’ll never forget the drive up to Oban – we’d packed the car to bursting with wellies, board games, and enough crisps to siege a castle, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Lochgilphead. It rerouted us down some single-track lane that had us white-knuckling round blind bends, convinced we’d end up in someone’s cow field. Turns out, it was a sneaky shortcut through the hills, and by the time we rolled up, hearts still racing a bit, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. What lay ahead?

First impressions? Spot on. This place is a spacious traditional farmhouse, recently nabbing a Silver Green Tourism Award for their eco-friendly ways – think sustainable setup that doesn’t skimp on comfort. Perfect for our multi-gen crew: kids, grannies, the lot. There’s a Cold Water Therapy Barrel and a cracking Scandinavian wood-fired hot tub for starry nights, plus a massive south-facing garden and patio where everyone could sprawl out without tripping over each other. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of fizz, toasting our lucky escape from the main road.

But the real magic kicked off when we ditched the tourist trail. Oban’s got its fancy spots, sure, but we stumbled on the hidden gems by pure accident – getting gloriously lost was the best bit. First wander, we veered off towards the Ganavan Sands trail instead of the harbour crush. What a find! That tucked-away beach, just a mile or so up the coast, with its pebbly shores and views across to Kerrera Island. We paddled in the shallows, the kids building epic driftwood forts while I skimmed stones like a pro (or so I told myself). No crowds, just seals popping up like cheeky neighbours.

Next day, aiming for a quick shop, we took a wrong turn inland and landed in the Soroba area’s secret walks. Narrow paths wound through oak woods dripping with moss, leading to a wee burn where we picnicked on cheese rolls. The air was alive with birdsong – wrens darting about like they owned the place. I sat there, feet in the water, having one of those quiet moments: holidays like this remind you life’s too short for schedules. Why rush when getting lost drops you in paradise?

Evenings, we’d fire up the hot tub, steam rising as we gazed at the Milky Way – no light pollution here. One night, a daft detour chasing a “scenic route” sign took us to a forgotten cove near Dunstaffnage, all rugged cliffs and whispering waves. We roasted marshmallows (sustainably sourced, naturally) and swapped stories till our fingers pruned.

Those off-the-beaten-path flukes made it unforgettable. No maps next time – just the road less travelled, a bit of mishap, and Oban’s quiet corners waiting to surprise you. Can’t wait to go back and lose ourselves again.
