About Perthshire
The drive up to Perthshire had me buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation—you know, the kind where you're picturing cosy fires and cracking views while the sat-nav does its thing. My partner and I were off for a wee break, just the two of us, craving some proper downtime in the hills. But typical us, we hit a snag about halfway: a cheeky sheep decided to block the single-track road near Aberfeldy. There we were, engine idling, me honking gently while it stared us down like it owned the place. Ten minutes of rural standoff later, it wandered off, and we were on our way, laughing about how Scotland always throws in a bit of drama to keep you on your toes.

Pulling into the tiny hamlet of Amulree, my heart lifted straight away. This place is pure magic—nestled in a tranquil spot with these magnificent mountain views that make you want to pinch yourself. Our cottage was just perfect: a charming, traditional wee thing right in the heart of it all, with the historic kirk from 1784 peeking over the hedge like a friendly neighbour. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local ale, and just soaked it in from the garden. No rush, no plans—just us and the hills.

The next few days were all about those simple pleasures that make cottage life so brilliant, even with its charming chaos. Mornings started with brekkie chaos: me burning toast while trying to master the quirky old toaster, her brewing up a storm with tea that could wake the dead. We'd wander down to the kirk for a quiet moment, marvelling at its history, then hop in the car for easy jaunts to nearby Dunkeld or Pitlochry. Dunkeld's got that picture-postcard vibe with its cathedral ruins and riverside paths—perfect for a gentle stroll hand-in-hand, spotting dippers bobbing in the Tay.

Pitlochry was a highlight, though. We timed it for the Enchanted Forest, Scotland's premier sound and light show—pure enchantment under the stars, with lights dancing through the trees like something out of a fairy tale. No bungee jumping for us (that's for the mad folk on the River Garry), but we did fancy a spot of walking up Ben Vrackie, puffing our way to views that had us grinning like kids. Evenings back at the cottage were bliss: cooking up simple suppers—venison stew one night, using bits from the Crieff farm shop—while the views turned golden at sunset. There was this one hilarious moment when the ancient boiler decided to sulk, leaving us shivering in our undies for a good half-hour. Cue much faffing with knobs and a cheeky dash to the pub in Amulree for a warming pint. Cottage life, eh? Never dull.

Reflecting on it now, as we packed up all too soon, I realised it's these unpolished bits—the sheep blockade, the boiler farce, the quiet joy of just being together—that make it. Perthshire's got it all for a relaxed couple's escape: the outdoor lure without the hassle, towns like Aberfeldy and Crieff a stone's throw for a coffee or whisky tasting at Dewar's. If you're after recharging with simple joys, this is the spot. Can't wait to go back.
