About Perthshire
Nestled right on the banks of a tranquil loch with the Grampian Mountains looming dramatically behind, this beautifully updated cottage was spot on for us – me, Dave, our two other mates, and the four kids between us. Cosy inside, with everything you need for a family getaway, it felt like stepping into a Highland hug. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and gazed out at that glassy water, already plotting our walks. First day, the weather gods smiled: clear blue skies, perfect for Queen’s View, just four miles away. We parked up and hiked the short path to the lookout – ravishing doesn’t cover it. You stare west across Loch Tummel, and on a day like that, you swear you can make out the misty peaks around Glencoe. The kids charged ahead, pretending to be Highland warriors, while we dads puffed along, marvelling at how Queen Victoria and even Isabella, wife of Robert the Bruce, fell for this spot. Pure magic, that wild green freedom. Next morning, classic British weather flipped the script – horizontal rain lashing the windows. No chance of a long hike, so we improvised with a forest ramble right from the cottage door. The myriad paths around here are brilliant for soggy days; we splashed through dripping trails, spotting red squirrels darting between pines. The kids loved it, turning puddles into pirate lagoons. Dave slipped arse-over-tit on a muddy slope, which had us in stitches – gentle reminder that I’m not the only klutz in the group. By afternoon, it cleared just enough for Allean Forest, 4.5 miles west. We trudged up to the 8th-century ring fort remains – eerie and ancient, like stumbling into a Time Team episode. The reconstructed 18th-century farmhouse added a bit of history porn for the grown-ups, and the views back over the loch were chef’s kiss. But halfway round, the heavens opened again, forcing an undignified dash back to the car, soaked to the skin and grinning like idiots. Looking back, those weather-whipped walks were the heart of it. Sunshine hikes felt like postcard perfection, but the rainy ones? They forced us off the beaten path, into the real soul of Perthshire – muddy boots, shared Thermos flasks, and that quiet thrill of the wild. Made me reflect: sometimes life’s best adventures are the ones that get you properly drenched. We left fitter, closer, and already plotting a return. If you fancy Highland bliss with a side of spontaneous chaos, this is your spot. |
