About Perthshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to Pitlochry – that winding A9 from Perth had me gripping the wheel like my life depended on it. We’d set off full of beans after a cheeky fry-up in the city, dreaming of Highland air and cosy nights in, but about halfway, disaster struck. The sat-nav, bless its unreliable soul, decided to throw a wobbly and rerouted us down some back lane that was more pothole than road. Bumping along, we laughed it off at first – “Adds to the adventure!” I quipped – but then the low-fuel light pinged on, and we were down to fumes with no petrol station in sight. Cue mild panic as we nursed the car into Pitlochry just as the heavens opened, turning the streets into a slip-and-slide.

By the time we pulled up to the place, we were a right state: soaked to the skin, bickering over whose fault the nav glitch was, and me fumbling with the key code like a drunk trying to thread a needle. But oh, what a payoff. Tucked away in this charming wee town, the studio opened up like a warm hug. It’s this beautifully designed spot for two, all open-plan with a sleek kitchen flowing into a cosy sitting area – perfect for kicking back with a brew at the breakfast bar. Natural light poured in through the windows, framing those rolling hills and valleys that make Perthshire so magic. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, dashed brilliant, given our soggy entrance.

We dumped our bags, cranked the heating, and within minutes were scoffing tea and biscuits, watching the rain lash the view like a proper Highland welcome. It felt like the universe saying, “Settle in, you eejits.” That night, after a hot shower in the spotless walk-in room – all contemporary and comfy – we crashed out on the double bed, knackered but chuffed. Next morning, the chaos of arrival was already a funny story. We wandered out to Pitlochry’s high street, just a stroll away, grabbing coffees at a quirky café before hitting the Dam for a gander at the fish ladder. Salmon leaping upstream – nature’s own acrobats – had us grinning like kids.

Later, we ambled along the old railway path to the theatre, puffing a bit on the gentle incline but rewarded with blackberry bushes begging to be picked. Lunch was fish and chips from the town chippy, eaten on a bench overlooking the River Tummel, where the water rushed like it was late for somewhere. Back at the studio, that serene backdrop turned golden in the afternoon sun, and I had a proper moment of reflection: life’s little mishaps, like our sat-nav farce, are what make these trips stick. Without them, it’d just be another pretty view. We even squeezed in a visit to the Explorers Garden, just up the road – exotic plants rubbing shoulders with Highland ruggedness, a perfect Perthshire mash-up.

Pitlochry’s got that knack for wrapping you up in its gentle charm, and this studio nailed it as a base. Cosy, convenient, and with views that make you forget the drive’s drama. If you’re after a Highland reset, this is your spot – just double-check your sat-nav first!
