About Perthshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to Pitlochry – a proper Scottish road trip that started with blue skies over the Forth and turned into a misty dash through the hills. We’d packed the car with enough tea bags and biscuits to last a siege, but about halfway there, just past the A9 turn-off, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It rerouted us down some winding B-road that felt like it was leading to Narnia, complete with sheep blocking the way and me panicking about missing our check-in. “This is it, we’re going to end up in the middle of nowhere,” I muttered, while my other half chuckled and cracked open a flask of coffee. Turns out, it was just a five-minute detour, but it had my heart racing like I was in a rally.

By the time we rolled into Pitlochry’s bustling high street, the anticipation was bubbling over. We’d been dreaming of this getaway for weeks – no alarms, no emails, just us switching off. Pulling up to the apartment, right in the heart of town, it was love at first sight. This stylish Highland retreat is a modest yet inviting spot for two, tucked into the lively streets but feeling like our own little world. Stepping inside that open-plan living space, we dropped our bags, flicked the kettle on, and exhaled. It was perfect – cosy, uncluttered, everything we needed without a fuss.

What we craved most wasn’t the big hikes or the distillery tours (though they’re all there if you fancy them). No, this trip was about doing very little, and boy, did it deliver. The first morning, I woke to birdsong filtering through the window and thought, “Why rush?” We ambled out to the small garden area – nothing grand, just a sweet patch of green with a couple of chairs and pots overflowing with heather. Sat there with a cuppa, watching the world go by: locals nipping to the shops, the odd dog-walker, and that gentle Highland breeze rustling the leaves. It was pure bliss, the kind that makes you realise how wired you’ve been back home.

Lazy days blurred into one another. I’d crack open a book – some daft crime novel I’d been saving – while sprawled on the sofa, feet up, with the window cracked for that fresh Pitlochry air. Lunch was simple: cheese toasties from the toaster, maybe a wander two minutes down the road for fresh scones from the bakery. Afternoons? More reading in the garden, or just dozing off under a blanket as the clouds scudded by. One evening, we lit a couple of candles (they were already there, thoughtful touch), poured wine, and played cards till we were yawning. No plans, no pressure – just unwinding together.

There was this gentle moment of self-reflection on day three, sat in that garden as the sun dipped low. I caught myself smiling at how I’d spent the morning staring at a butterfly instead of scrolling my phone. Back in the daily grind, I’m always chasing the next thing – work deadlines, errands, you name it. Here, doing sod all felt revolutionary. It’s funny how a wee apartment in Pitlochry can reset your soul like that. We left feeling lighter, already plotting a return. If you’re after a proper slowdown, this is the spot.
