About Perthshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to Perthshire – sat nav insisting we were nearly there, then bam, a cheeky flock of sheep decided to stage a sit-in right across the single-track road. Me, fiddling with the radio for some decent tunes, my other half sighing dramatically as if it was my fault the woolly lot had unionised. Twenty minutes of gentle honking and farmer-charming later, we were off again, hearts racing a bit more than planned. But as Aberfeldy came into view, nestled by Scotland’s longest river, that anticipation bubbled up – the Tay sparkling under the Highland Perthshire sun, those spectacular Birks of Aberfeldy ridges promising proper adventure. We were buzzing.

Pulling up to our spot, a cracking all-ground-floor place right in the thick of it, I was chuffed. Bright and airy inside, kitted out with everything a family or bunch of walkers could need – perfect for our lot, spilling out of the car with rucksacks and mismatched wellies. No faffing up stairs after a long day’s yomping. First impressions? Spot on. Dropped the bags, brewed a cuppa, and stepped out to that rural hush, knowing we were minutes from the River Tay’s watery thrills or Dewar’s whisky world if we fancied a nosey.

But the real magic? Getting properly lost. We’re talking hidden gems stumbled upon by accident, the kind that don’t make the glossy guides. Day one, we headed for a “short countryside stroll” – yeah, right. Map in hand (old-school style, no signals out here), we veered off the main path near the Birks, chasing a glimpse of what looked like a secret waterfall. Hours later, sweaty and triumphant, we’d found this tucked-away cascade, not a soul around, just us picnicking on cheese rolls with the water thundering below. Laugh-out-loud moment when I slipped on moss and ended up bum-deep in a puddle – “elegant as ever,” quipped the wife. Pure joy.

Next mishap-turned-treasure: cycling along the Tay, we took a wrong turn down a farm track, ditching the helmets for a mooch. Ended up at this forgotten wee bothy by a loch, heather exploding everywhere, with views that stopped us dead. Sat there with flasks of tea, watching buzzards wheel overhead – off-the-beaten-track bliss you can’t plan. Even the kids ditched their phones, spotting otters darting in the shallows. Another day, wandering from the property, we “accidentally” bushwhacked into a wildflower meadow bursting with orchids and butterflies, the kind of spot locals probably keep schtum about.

Getting lost like that forced a bit of reflection, mind. In the rush of city life, I’m always charging ahead, ticking boxes. Here, with no choice but to slow down and stumble into these pockets of Perthshire magic – the quiet glens, the unexpected river bends – it hit me: sometimes the best finds are the ones you weren’t looking for. We packed more stories than selfies, and that rural retreat made it all effortless. If you’re after a Highland getaway that’s equal parts relaxing and rip-roaring, this is your spot. Can’t wait to get lost there again.
