About Perthshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to Perthshire that crisp autumn morning – satnav on, tea thermos in hand, and me humming along to some old folk tunes. But about halfway there, near the A9 turn-off, disaster struck: a cheeky pheasant decided to play chicken with my car, sending me swerving into a layby with heart in mouth. No harm done, bar a few feathers and my pride, but it set the tone for a trip full of happy accidents. By the time I crested the hill above the River Tay, the anticipation was buzzing – would this secluded cottage live up to the photos? First impressions? Spot on. Perched high with those jaw-dropping panoramic views, it’s a cosy, pet-friendly haven perfect for our group of eight, complete with space for the dogs to romp and even stables for horses if you’re that way inclined. Privacy wrapped in comfort, just begging for Highland adventures.

We’d barely unpacked when the real magic started – no grand itineraries, just a wander down the estate’s scenic trails, letting curiosity lead. First hidden gem? Stumbled upon it by pure fluke: a forgotten wee waterfall tucked off the path near the cottage, where the water cascades into a crystal pool that’s begging for a paddle (brr, not in October, mind). The dogs went mental splashing about while we picnicked on scones from Aberfeldy’s bakery, laughing at how we’d missed the main signpost entirely. Getting lost never felt so right.

Next day, another serendipitous detour. Aiming for a quick loop around the local woods, we veered onto a barely-there track – turns out, it spat us out at this secret glen viewpoint overlooking the Tay, miles from the coach parties. Wind in our hair, flask of proper builder’s tea, and not a soul in sight. I sat there a moment, reflecting on how often life’s rush blinds us to these pockets of peace. Me, always the planner, finally admitting that a bit of aimless rambling beats a packed schedule any day. Lightbulb moment, that.

The pattern continued: one afternoon, chasing a rogue ball down a side path led to a wildflower meadow alive with bees and butterflies, right on the estate’s edge – an off-the-beaten-track bloom you’d never find on a map. Evening brought a “lost” hike that circled back to a hidden bothy ruin, perfect for ghost stories by headtorch as the stars popped out. Even the dogs unearthed their own gems, flushing out rabbits from burrows we’d have overlooked.

Pitlochry’s buzz is grand, but it’s these accidental discoveries – the quiet corners Perthshire hides so well – that made the stay unforgettable. No regrets about that pheasant panic; it nudged us off the straight and narrow into proper adventure. If you’re after a retreat where getting lost is the best-laid plan, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
