About Perthshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in Highland Perthshire – a proper Scottish adventure that started with a comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car from Edinburgh, kids in the back with snacks and games, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. About halfway, just past the A9 turn-off, we hit a massive downpour. The wipers were going berserk, and I missed the exit for Pitlochry by a good mile, ending up in some twisty back lane with sheep glaring at us like we’d gatecrashed their party. A quick U-turn and a mumbled apology to the family later, we were back on track, hearts racing a bit but buzzing with that arrival anticipation. As the rain eased, the hills unfolded around us, all misty and magical, and I couldn’t wait to kick off our shoes.

Pulling up to the place near Pitlochry was pure joy – first impressions? Spot on. It’s this traditional home spread over three floors, perfect for our group, with that cosy Highland vibe that screams “relax and forget the world”. We tumbled in, bags everywhere, and straight away felt at home. The kitchen’s a dream for lazy mornings – three ovens, two dishwashers, and a massive table for lingering over brekkie. But honestly, we barely cooked; it was all about the downtime.

Our days blurred into this blissful rhythm of doing sod all, and it was brilliant. Mornings kicked off with coffee on the raised decking outside, wrapped in blankets, watching the loch sparkle under the sun. The garden setup is genius – enclosed patio, wood-fired hot tub bubbling away (we christened it on night one, stars overhead), and a sauna that had us steaming out the city stress. Those timber jetties down by the water? Heaven. I’d flop into a deckchair with a book, toes dangling near the edge, listening to the gentle lap of waves. No pressure to swim or fish, though the kids dipped in once or twice for a giggle. Pets welcome too – our dog spent hours snoozing in the sun, tail twitching at birds.

Inside, it was pure indolence central. The sitting room with its woodburning stove became our nest; we’d stoke it up, sprawl on sofas with mugs of tea, and lose hours to rubbish telly or just staring into the flames. Basement cinema room for lazy film marathons (Paddington on repeat), or the first-floor TV nook for solo scrolling. Bedrooms are lush – en-suites everywhere, freestanding baths for soaking with a novel. I claimed a king-size one, bunkered down with a stack of paperbacks I’d been meaning to read for years.

Pitlochry’s just 11 miles off, so we nipped in once for a pub lunch and a riverside wander – those woodland trails are gorgeous for a gentle stretch. But mostly? We stayed put, savouring the slow. One evening, hot-tubbing as dusk fell, I had a proper moment of self-reflection: life’s mad rush back home, deadlines and bustle, felt a million miles away. Here, time stretched out, and I realised how rare it is to just *be*. No grand hikes, no packed itineraries – just loch views, good company, and the joy of faffing about. Perthshire’s got its thrills, but this was our perfect unplug. We left fatter, happier, and plotting a return. Proper holiday magic.
