About Perthshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to Grandtully in Perthshire – a proper Scottish adventure that started with a comedy of errors. We’d set off from Perth early, buzzing with that holiday anticipation, windows down, tunes on, dreaming of cosy evenings by a woodburner. But no, about halfway there, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow back road, and the sat-nav lost its marbles. We ended up in a field with sheep giving us side-eye, me frantically reversing while my mate laughed so hard he nearly spilled his coffee. Twenty minutes later, we were back on track, and honestly, it just added to the fun – nothing like a daft mishap to kick off a proper getaway.

Pulling up to the cottage, my heart did a little flip. It’s this charming spot right in the tranquil village, just 4.7 miles from Aberfeldy, with off-road parking and countryside views that hit you like a warm hug. The exterior’s dead picturesque, and stepping inside? Instant love. The contemporary kitchen’s kitted out with everything you could need – we were straight in there rustling up bacon butties, feeling like we’d won the lottery. The dining area’s got this woodburning stove that begs for a lazy fire, and a piano that my other half tinkled on (badly, but enthusiastically).

But let’s be honest, the real joy of this place was doing sod all. After that drive, we were all about slowing right down, Perthshire-style. The garden’s an absolute dream – enclosed and peaceful, with birdsong and those rolling hills stretching out. I’d flop into a lounger with a book (devoured three thrillers in two days), cuppa in hand, while the others dozed or played cards on the grass. Mornings blurred into afternoons of nothing much: toast by the stove, a gentle wander to the garden bench for some people-watching (mostly rabbits), maybe a cheeky nap on the sofa. No schedules, no rush – just that glorious, bone-deep relaxation you only get in a spot like this.

One afternoon, staring out at the hills, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, emails, the lot. Here, time stretched out lazy as a cat in sunshine. I caught myself grinning at how simple it felt: no grand plans, just us lot pottering about, sharing stories over tea, the piano providing a wonky soundtrack. It’s funny how you don’t realise how knackered you are until you stop. We did venture out once, a short stroll to Grandtully’s green for a pint at the local, but even that was half-hearted – back before dark for more stove-gazing.

By the end of the week, we’d achieved peak idleness: sunburnt noses, empty book stacks, and souls recharged. If you’re after a family or mates’ escape in Perth and Kinross, this is it – a reminder that sometimes, the best holiday is the one where you barely leave the garden. Pure bliss.
