About Perthshire
I’ll never forget the drive up to Perthshire – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and me, daft as ever, taking a wrong turn just past Dunkeld because the satnav decided to throw a wobbly. We ended up on some narrow, winding lane that looked more like a sheep track than a road, with the kids in the back chanting “Are we there yet?” for the umpteenth time. But honestly, that little mishap was the perfect teaser – by the time we pulled into the quiet rural village of Strathtay, hearts racing with that buzz of arrival, the clouds parted just enough to reveal rolling hills glowing in the late afternoon light. First impressions? Magic. This quaint semi-detached cottage felt like a hug from the Highlands itself – stepping inside to that open-plan living space, we dumped the bags and straight away got stuck into rustling up a hearty pasta in the amply-equipped kitchen, setting the sociable dinner table for a proper family feast with a cheeky bottle of wine. Post-dinner, we kicked back by the warming woodburning stove, snuggled on the sofa with the TV flickering, utterly content after the road drama.

The real joy of the place, though, was how it nudged us off the beaten track. No grand plans, just a vague notion to explore, and boy, did getting lost pay off. First morning, fancying a wander, we followed a sign for the River Tay that no tourist map bothered with – ended up at this hidden wee spot where the water rushes over smooth pebbles, perfect for skimmin’ stones. The kids were in their element, whooping as they tried (and mostly failed) to get a flat one to bounce more than twice. I had a quiet chuckle watching my other half, usually Miss Organised, slip on a mossy rock and end up with wet trainers – harmless fun, but it had us all giggling.

Next day, we veered off down a farm track by accident, chasing a glimpse of Highland cows through the mist. Stumbled on a tucked-away RSPB hide overlooking a loch I’d never heard of – otters playing in the shallows, kingfishers darting like blue bullets. No crowds, just us and the wildlife, binoculars borrowed from the cottage drawer. Felt like we’d cracked open a secret Perthshire chapter no one else reads. Even a rainy afternoon led to gold: lost in the village lanes, we found this old kirkyard with wonky gravestones and tales of lairds from centuries back, whispering winds through the trees like they were sharing gossip.

One evening, reflecting over tea by the stove, I realised this trip was a nudge to slow down – life back home’s all rush and screens, but here, getting lost unlocked these hidden gems that made us properly connect. No regrets about that satnav fail; it set the tone for the best kind of holiday, where the unplanned bits shine brightest. If you’re after that cosy rural escape, Perthshire’s calling – just embrace the detours.
