About Scottish Borders
I’ll never forget the drive up to Teviothead in the Scottish Borders – a proper white-knuckle affair after my sat-nav decided to play silly buggers just outside Selkirk, sending me down a narrow single-track that felt more like a sheep’s personal runway than a road. Battered by a sudden downpour, I white-knuckled it for what seemed like miles, convinced I’d end up in a ditch with only my soggy crisps for company. But as I crested the final hill, the clouds parted just enough to reveal this stylish lodge perched in an elevated spot with jaw-dropping views over the rolling countryside. First impressions? Magic. The kind of place that makes you exhale and think, “Aye, this’ll do nicely.”

Nestled in the historic heart of Teviothead, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it was the perfect base for what I’d planned as a walking holiday. No faffing about with cars – trails started right from the door. Day one dawned crisp and clear, so I laced up and tackled Ian Landles’ nine-mile hill walk, a cracker that winds up through heather-clad slopes with vistas that stretch forever. The air was that fresh, Borders-sharp bite, and spotting a buzzard wheeling overhead felt like I’d stumbled into a wildlife documentary. I even paused for a cheeky flask of tea, grinning like an eejit at how alive everything felt.

But oh, the British weather – that fickle friend who loves a plot twist. By day two, it was lashing it down, turning paths into slippy mudslides. My grand plan for a full circuit along the River Teviot went pear-shaped; I’d barely gone a mile before the heavens opened proper, soaking me to the bone. Laughing at my own daftness (why didn’t I pack that spare fleece?), I pivoted to a shorter loop closer to the lodge, dodging puddles the size of lochans and pretending I was on some intrepid survival trek. It wasn’t glamorous – think squelching boots and a face like a drowned rat – but there’s something oddly satisfying about battling the elements here. The hills take on this moody, dramatic hue under grey skies, and the Teviot’s salmon pools look wilder than ever, even if fishing was off the cards for a fair-weather lad like me.

Come day three, the sun cheekily reappeared, so I ventured out again, this time sticking to gentler riverside paths hugging the Teviot. The contrast was brilliant – yesterday’s bog turned to bouncy turf, wildflowers popping up like they’d been hiding. I reflected mid-stride on how these weather whims had made the holiday richer; without the rain-lashed slogs, I might’ve missed that quiet joy of hunkering down with a book by the window, watching mist roll off the hills. It’s a reminder, isn’t it, that plans are just suggestions up here.

A quick hop to Hawick – barely a ten-minute drive – sorted out wellies and a decent pie for lunch, but the real draw was those on-the-doorstep rambles. Whether blasted by gales or bathed in rare sunshine, the Borders’ trails deliver. If you’re after a spot to stretch the legs and let the weather write the script, this lodge in Teviothead is a belter. I left fitter, muddier, and oddly wiser.
