About Scottish Borders
I’ll never forget the drive down from Edinburgh to the Scottish Borders – a proper hairpin nightmare through the Lammermuirs that had me white-knuckling the wheel after taking a wrong turn onto some sheep-dotted single-track. One particularly cheeky ewe decided to photobomb my reversing manoeuvre, staring me down like I’d gatecrashed her lunch. Laughing it off, I finally spotted the cottage nestled in this gorgeous rural pocket, heart lifting at the sight of those rolling hills under a vast sky. First impressions? Pure magic – the kind that makes you exhale and think, “Yep, this is exactly what I needed.”

It’s the sort of stylish period cottage that’s perfect for couples, mates or families after a proper country retreat. Adjoined to the owners’ house but with bags of privacy, it sits bang in the middle of the Lammermuirs, close enough to the Scottish Borders’ splendours without the hassle. Edinburgh’s just a breezy drive away for festivals like the Fringe or a gawp at the Military Tattoo, but honestly, who needs it when you’ve got this?

The joy of the whole trip was doing sod all – and I mean that in the best possible way. After that faffing journey, I dumped my bags and flopped straight into the garden, mug of tea in hand, watching mist drift over the hills like a lazy watercolour. No itinerary, no alarms, just the hum of bees and the odd curlew calling. I’d brought a stack of books I’d been meaning to crack for ages – that new Ian Rankin thriller and a battered copy of Outlander for some local flavour. Curled up on a sun lounger, I lost hours turning pages, only pausing to brew more tea or nibble on scones from the village shop down the road.

Mornings blurred into afternoons of pure inertia. I’d wander the garden paths, picking at wildflowers and pretending I was botanist extraordinaire (spoiler: I’m rubbish at plant names). One day, I managed a gentle amble along a nearby track – nothing strenuous, just enough to feel the fresh Borders air fill my lungs before retreating back to base for a nap in the shade. The owners left a welcome basket of local treats: shortbread that melted on the tongue, and some cracking cheddar from a nearby farm. Evenings were for firing up the stove, rustling up simple suppers like pasta with herbs from the garden, then sinking into an armchair with a glass of wine, windows flung open to the twilight chorus.

There was this gentle moment of self-reflection on day three, staring out at the hills while rain pattered softly on the roof. Life back home’s a whirlwind of deadlines and to-do lists – when did I last switch off like this? It hit me that slowing down isn’t lazy; it’s essential. No guilt, no FOMO, just me, the cottage, and the sheer bliss of time stretching out.

By the time I packed up, reluctantly, I’d rediscovered the art of pottering. If you’re craving a Borders escape where the highlight is a really good book and a cracking view, this is your spot. I’m already plotting a return – minus the sheep standoff, hopefully.
