About Scottish Borders
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Scottish Borders last month – what was meant to be a smooth jaunt from Edinburgh turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my sat-nav’s sudden rebellion. It kept directing me down these tiny, winding lanes that felt more like sheep tracks, and just as I was cursing under my breath (politely, mind), we hit a massive puddle from the morning’s drizzle. Splash! The car looked like it’d been mud-wrestling, and my other half was wiping muck off the windscreen with a half-eaten pack of crisps. By the time we spotted the off-road parking spot near Coldingham, we were late, laughing hysterically, and desperately needing a cuppa.

Pulling up to this ground-floor apartment, I felt that proper holiday buzz kick in – you know, the one where everything ahead feels full of promise despite the chaos behind. First impressions? Spot on. It’s the sort of functional, no-fuss retreat that screams “kick back and explore” without any pretensions. We bundled in, bags tumbling everywhere, and were hit with this cosy wave of calm. Three bedrooms right there at the front: a king-size one with its own telly (perfect for lazy evenings after traipsing about), a comfy double, and a twin that’d suit kids or mates no bother. Thoughtfully done, each one a little haven to flop into.

After the road madness, the sleek shower room was pure bliss – walk-in shower, basin, WC, all spanking new and inviting. I jumped in first, emerging feeling human again while the others unpacked. The heart of it all is the open living space, pulling you straight into that “ahh, we’re here” vibe. Kitchen kitted out nicely for family brekkies or mates’ suppers, and the lounge with its big dining area overlooking the rolling Borders countryside. We cracked open a bottle of fizz (smooth fizz, no expense spared) as the sun dipped low, casting this golden glow over fields that stretched towards the sea.

That first evening set the tone perfectly. A short wander down to Coldingham Beach – all shingle and waves crashing under dramatic skies – had us picking up driftwood and dodging seagulls like pros. Back for a simple pasta feast, we sprawled out, sharing daft stories from the drive. Next morning, it was St Abbs Harbour, just a hop away, with its puffins nesting on the cliffs (or so we hoped – binoculars at the ready). We huffed up the paths, wind whipping our faces, rewarded by views that make you forget city stresses. Lunch at a chippy in Eyemouth, battered haddock so fresh it practically swam off the plate, then back for a siesta in those tranquil bedrooms.

Truth be told, amid the arrival kerfuffle, I had a quiet moment reflecting on how these little hiccups make the best memories. No five-star polish, just real, unfiltered Borders charm – family laughs, fresh air, and a base that let us dive into it all. If you’re after a getaway that feels like home but with sea breezes and coastal paths on the doorstep, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return, sat-nav be damned.
