About Scottish Borders
I’ll never forget the drive up to Eyemouth last month – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and a sudden downpour turning the A1 into a bit of a watery adventure. We’d just passed Berwick when I took a wrong turn onto some narrow B-road, convinced I was heading for a scenic shortcut. Half an hour later, we’re laughing about it over soggy sandwiches at a layby, but honestly, it added to the anticipation. By the time we rolled into town, the rain had cleared, and there it was: this cracking traditional apartment right by the sea, one of the oldest spots in Eyemouth, unchanged for over 220 years except for the blissfully modern central heating. First impressions? Magic. The sea views hit you straight away, and I could already picture lazy days ahead.

Stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm hug from the past. The lounge is proper cosy, with that rose-coloured sofa and armchair begging you to flop down, and a little dining table tucked in the corner perfect for a cuppa and the morning paper. We dumped the bags and cracked open a window – the harbour sounds drifted in, all gulls and gentle waves. No grand plans, mind; this trip was all about doing sod all, and it suited us down to the ground.

The kitchen’s a gem too, kitted out with everything you need, and that outlook over the courtyard? Pure charm. I’d potter about making toast while gazing out at the characterful little space below, feeling miles away from the daily grind. Upstairs, the two double bedrooms are neutrally done, dead relaxing, with the shower room right there for easy mornings. We slept like logs every night, lulled by the sea.

Most days blurred into this glorious rhythm of slowing right down. Breakfast in the lounge, then a book on the sofa – I devoured a battered old thriller I’d brought along, losing hours without a care. Lunch was simple: cheese on toast, feet up, watching fishing boats bob in the harbour. Afternoons? The courtyard called. It’s a tucked-away suntrap, ideal for stretching out with another chapter or just staring at the sky, letting thoughts wander. One day I even nodded off in the armchair, waking to find the light golden over the water – pure contentment.

We did venture out a smidge, mind. A gentle wander to the harbour, breathing in that salty air, or a pint at one of Eyemouth’s cracking pubs, where the fish and chips are legendary. The clifftop golf course tempted, but nah – we saved our energy for birdwatching from the window, spotting puffins and gannets wheeling about. It’s all right there, no car needed.

Looking back, that little mishap on the road was a gift – it made arriving feel like a proper treat. In a world that never stops, this place taught me the joy of proper idling. No checklists, no hustle, just the sea, a good book, and that courtyard glow. If you fancy recharging without lifting a finger, Eyemouth’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
