About Scottish Borders
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Scottish Borders last month – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and a boot full of snacks for what I thought would be a straightforward jaunt. But no, halfway through, just past the A68, I took a wrong turn onto some winding single-track road, convinced I was heading straight into the Cheviot Hills. Cue mild panic, a three-point turn that took about 15, and a sheep giving me the side-eye like I’d personally offended it. Still, by the time I pulled up to this cosy chalet-style holiday let near Coldstream, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine hot tea, no emails, and zero responsibilities.

First impressions? Spot on. Tucked away with a cracking garden that rolled out like a welcome mat, it felt like the perfect spot to switch off. Pet-friendly too, which was a godsend for bringing along our daft Labrador, who immediately claimed the grass as his kingdom. We unloaded in minutes, kicked off our shoes, and that was it – the joy of doing bugger all officially began.

Lazy cottage days became our religion. Mornings started slow: I’d potter out to the garden with a mug of builder’s tea, plonking myself in one of those weathered chairs while mist clung to the hedges. The Borders air has this crisp, peaty edge that makes everything taste better – even the slightly over-brewed PG Tips I managed to make. Reading was my vice; I devoured a battered copy of Iain Banks I’d been lugging around for years, losing hours under the dappled light filtering through the trees. No rushing, no plans – just the rustle of pages and the odd bird cheeping away.

Afternoons blurred into the same blissful rhythm. We’d fire up the chalet’s little barbecue for sausages and tatties (none of your fancy fusion stuff – keep it simple), then flop back with a book or a podcast about nothing much. The garden was a dream for slowing right down: I’d stretch out on a blanket, watching clouds scoot over the border hills, feeling that gentle ache of muscles unwinding after months hunched over a desk. Our dog chased his tail in manic circles, which was the height of excitement. One day, I even managed a nap – a proper, drool-on-the-cushion job – and woke up grinning like an idiot. Who knew doing less could feel so grand?

There was this quiet moment of self-reflection on the third day, sat there with the sun finally breaking through. I caught myself thinking how I’d spent the year chasing deadlines, always onto the next thing, and here I was, utterly content with a book, a brew, and birdsong. No epiphany, just a soft nudge: maybe life’s best bits are the ones where you let the world spin without you.

By the end of the week, we’d barely left the garden boundaries. A gentle stroll to the Hirsel – that estate just down the road with its ponds and paths – was our one big outing, but even that was ambling pace, feeding ducks and breathing deep. Packing up felt criminal, but driving off, I knew we’d be back. The Scottish Borders chalet life? Pure, unadulterated sloth heaven. If you’re after recharging without the faff, this is your spot.
