About Scottish Borders
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Scottish Borders last month – what was meant to be a smooth jaunt from Newcastle turned into a comedy of errors thanks to Sat Nav’s sudden rebellion. There I was, humming along to some cracking tunes on the A1, when the thing decided to reroute me through every narrow farm lane in Northumberland. Mud splattered the windscreen, the dog started whining like I’d personally offended her, and just as I thought we’d escaped, a rogue pheasant shot out in front of the car. Heart in mouth, I swerved, missed it by a whisker, and ended up with a branch wedged under the wheel arch. By the time I limped into Coldstream, I was frazzled, covered in dog hair, and questioning my life choices.

But oh, the anticipation had been building all week – visions of cosy rural escape, fresh Borders air, and no emails pinging at me. Pulling up to the glamping pod just outside town, that first glimpse was a right tonic. Tucked into a peaceful spot with rolling fields stretching out, it looked every bit the quirky hideaway: a snug wooden pod with a cheeky veranda, fairy lights twinkling even in daylight, and that welcoming pet-friendly vibe that had us grinning despite the chaos. The hosts waved us in with big smiles and a thermos of tea – proper legends.

Stepping inside, I let out a sigh of relief. It was compact but brilliant: a comfy double bed piled high with quilts, a little kitchenette stocked with basics, and a wood burner ready to roar. The en-suite was surprisingly swish for something so rustic, and those big windows framed views of the Cheviot Hills that made you want to pinch yourself. We unpacked in a flurry – me still picking twigs from my hair – and within minutes, the dog was sprawled out, claiming her spot.

First impressions? Spot on. That evening, we wandered a short stroll to the River Tweed, just a couple of minutes away, where the water sparkled under the fading light. It was pure magic, dipping toes in the cool flow and spotting herons gliding by. No crowds, just us and the gentle burble. Back at the pod, I fired up the burner, cracked open a bottle of Borders red (local shop run sorted that), and rustled up pasta while the other half fiddled with the fire pit outside. Stars popped out overhead, clearer than I’d seen in ages, and we roasted marshmallows till our faces hurt from laughing.

Reflecting on it now, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker – reminded me holidays aren’t about flawless plans, but those unexpected stories you end up retelling with a chuckle. We spent the next days pottering to nearby spots like the Hirsel Estate, a quick hop away for woodland walks and a pond alive with wildlife. Paused at a café in Coldstream for scones slathered in jam – heaven. The pod became our little sanctuary, waking to birdsong and birds-eye views. If you’re after a chilled reset without the trek to the Highlands, this corner of the Borders delivers. Already plotting a return, minus the pheasant drama.
