About Scottish Borders
Pulling up to the cosy stone cottage just outside Newcastleton, my heart did a little flip of anticipation – you know that buzz when you’ve swapped city chaos for proper peace? First impressions? Spot on. Tucked into a quiet corner with views over rolling hills, it had that welcoming, lived-in charm – think comfy sofas begging for a collapse, a wood burner ready for evening chills, and a kitchen stocked for lazy fry-ups. Slept like a log that first night, lulled by the silence. Next morning, fancying a wander, I grabbed the Ordnance Survey map (sat-nav be damned) and headed out, aiming for a vague trail near the Hermitage. But true to form, I took a wrong turn at a fork – or was it right? – and stumbled into this hidden gem of a waterfall tucked in a wooded gorge, far from any tourist board. No crowds, just the roar of water tumbling over mossy rocks, and me grinning like an idiot with my flask of tea. It’s spots like that, found by happy accident, that make the Borders special – off-the-beaten-track treasures you’d miss if you stuck to the paths. Emboldened, I let the getting-lost vibe guide the rest of the week. One afternoon, veering off near Liddesdale, I discovered a wee ruined peel tower half-buried in bracken, the kind of forgotten border reiver haunt with panoramic views over empty glens. Picnicked there with cheese rolls from the village shop, feeling like I’d time-slipped. Another day, a “shortcut” through forestry tracks led to a serene lochlet shimmering under the sun, perfect for skimmed stones and zero phone signal – bliss. Even a rainy ramble unearthed a secret bothy by a burn, its turf roof blending into the hillside like nature’s own hideout. Of course, not every detour was Instagram gold. I once looped back to the same gate three times, laughing at my own daftness – a gentle nudge that maybe I’m not cut out for Bear Grylls, but who cares? These unplanned finds beat any guidebook itinerary. Back at the cottage each evening, feet up with a dram, I reflected on how easy it is to chase the big sights and miss the quiet wonders right under your nose. That’s the Borders for you: it rewards the wanderer, turning mishaps into memories. If you’re after a holiday that’s more meander than marathon, this neck of the woods delivers. Just pack your sense of adventure – and maybe a spare Ordnance Survey. |
