About Scottish Borders
I’ll never forget the drive up to the Scottish Borders last month – my wife and I piling into the car with a boot full of snacks, maps (just in case the satnav threw a wobbly), and that bubbling excitement for a proper getaway. We’d been craving a break from the daily grind, you know, the sort where you swap deadlines for dog walks and deadlines for, well, nothing much at all. About halfway there, near the A7, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our lane was prime grazing and strolled right in front of us. I slammed on the brakes, heart in my mouth, and we both burst out laughing as the woolly intruder ambled off like it owned the road. “Welcome to the Borders,” I chuckled, easing us back on track. By the time we trundled into Newcastleton, the anticipation was electric – would it live up to the photos?

Pulling up to our cosy stone cottage, I was chuffed to bits. It was one of those classic two-bedroom numbers, all welcoming and tucked away in a quiet spot, with a garden that screamed “put your feet up”. First impressions? Spot on. The owners had left fresh scones and jam on the kitchen table – proper thoughtful touch that had us grinning like kids. We dumped the bags and cracked open a cuppa, soaking in the view of rolling hills from the lounge window. No grand adventures planned; this was about us, a bit of cottage chaos, and simple joys.

The next few days blurred into the best kind of rhythm. Mornings kicked off with brews in bed, then a wander down to Newcastleton’s high street for bacon rolls from the local shop – crispy, greasy perfection. We’d amble along the Hermitage trails, just a short hop away, holding hands like we were newlyweds again. The paths wind through ancient woods, past waterfalls that crash like nature’s own applause. One afternoon, I slipped on a muddy bit (classic me, always the klutz), ending up with a soggy bum and us in stitches. “You’re a right liability,” she teased, helping me up. Gentle chaos, that’s cottage life for you.

Evenings were pure bliss. We’d fire up the barbecue in the garden – nothing fancy, just bangers and tatties – while the sun dipped low over the Liddesdale hills. One night, we played board games till late, me cheating shamelessly at Scrabble (she caught me every time), laughing till our sides hurt. No kids in tow this trip, mind – just us two, rediscovering that quiet spark. It got me reflecting, sat there with a dram in hand: how often do we let life rush past without these pauses? In the Borders, time slows right down, and you remember what matters – shared glances, daft mishaps, and the comfort of being together.

We hated leaving after four nights. If you’re after a relaxed couple’s escape, this corner of Scotland delivers. Simple pleasures, a touch of chaos, and memories to cherish. We’re already plotting a return.
