About St Andrews
Pulling up to the place felt like stumbling on a proper hidden gem. It’s this inviting, dog-friendly cottage plonked right on a working farm, perfect for a family or mates like us wanting a base for outdoor jaunts without the tourist hordes. First impressions? Spot on – cosy inside, with everything you need, and that tranquil farmland backdrop just begging you to kick off your shoes and breathe. We arrived mid-afternoon, bags dumped, and immediately set off for a wander, no map, just vibes. That’s when the magic happened. Instead of heading straight to Pittenweem or Anstruther – which are literally less than two miles away with their quaint harbours and sandy beaches – we veered off down a unmarked path behind the farm. Turned out it led to this secluded cove I’d never heard of, tucked away from the main drags. Crystal-clear water lapping at pebbles, seals bobbing offshore like they owned the place. We spent hours there, skimming stones and picnicking with cheese from a local farm shop we’d spotted en route. Pure bliss, and not a soul in sight. Next day, we got lost again – this time on purpose, sort of. Wandered the back lanes towards Pittenweem and accidentally found ourselves at a tiny art studio run by a chap who paints nothing but seascapes from his window. He let us in for a cuppa and a natter about the annual arts festival; turns out it’s a proper local affair, hidden from the guidebooks. Dave bought a wonky puffin painting that now hangs wonkier in his lounge. Feeling peckish, we pushed on and stumbled into Anstruther’s lesser-known fish shed – not the main chippy everyone raves about, but this hole-in-the-wall where the batter’s crispier than a winter frost, and the owner shared tales of boat trips to the Isle of May for puffins. We didn’t go, but the stories had us hooked. One evening, looping back via the farm tracks, we chanced on an old smugglers’ path winding down to a pebbly beach hidden by dunes. Sat there with a flask, watching the sun dip, and I had a proper moment of reflection – you know, that quiet realisation that life’s too short for crowded spots? Getting lost like this, uncovering these off-the-beaten-track treasures, reminded me why I love these escapes. No itinerary, just serendipity. Our few days flew by in a haze of accidental discoveries – wildflower meadows for dog walks, a forgotten harbour wall perfect for crabbing. That cottage was the ideal launchpad for it all, far from the St Andrews golf buzz just up the road. If you’re after proper Scotland without the selfie sticks, get yourself lost here. You won’t regret it. |
