About St Andrews
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot near St Andrews – we’d piled into the car in Edinburgh, full of beans after a fry-up, only for the sat-nav to chuck us onto some winding back road that turned into a muddy track after a sudden downpour. “This is it, innit?” I muttered to my mate Dave as we skidded to a halt, tyres spinning like we were in a rally. Heart in mouth, but we made it, laughing it off with a quick tow from a local farmer who appeared out of nowhere. That little mishap only ramped up the anticipation – we were buzzing to see this luxurious house tucked between St Andrews and Dundee, just 8 miles from the former and 7 from the latter, perfect for our walking-obsessed crew.

First impressions? Blimey, it blew us away. Spacious, comfy, with everything you’d need for a gang of mates or family – think big living areas for plotting the day’s hikes and cracking views over the Fife countryside. We dumped the bags and headed straight out, keen to stretch our legs after the drive.

Day one was a belter: clear skies, not a cloud in sight. We cycled the 4 miles to Tentsmuir Nature Reserve and Kinshaldy Beach, following the marked paths through whispering pine forests. The sand dunes were epic for a proper stomp – miles of golden beach, seals barking offshore, and those benches behind the dunes where we plonked down for sandwiches. We even fired up one of the BBQ stations in the field, flames crackling as the sun dipped low. Pure magic, that Fife coast.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Next morning, we planned a longer hike along the forest trails towards the beach again, but the heavens opened like someone upturned a bucket. Sodden boots, hoods up, we pushed on anyway, splashing through puddles and dodging wind-whipped branches. It was grim at first – faces lashed by rain, cursing the midges that thrived in the damp – but then it turned into one of those adventures you yarn about later. We sheltered under massive pines, brewing tea on a portable stove, and watched the storm roll out over the estuary. By afternoon, blue skies peeked through, and we wandered the calmer paths, spotting deer in the clearings. Changed our plans completely, but that’s the joy of it, isn’t it?

A couple of days later, grey drizzle forced us closer to home – we stuck to local loops around the property, discovering hidden tracks that wound through fields and woodland. Not glamorous, but peaceful, with the rain pattering like a gentle drum. It made me reflect a bit: rushing about in good weather’s grand, but these soggy slogs remind you why you love a good walk. No signal, no distractions, just you, your mates, and the rhythm of your steps. We even practised a bit of short game on nearby courses like Drumoig, just a short tramp away, swinging clubs between showers.

Back at the house each night, drying off and swapping stories, we felt properly recharged. If you’re after walks that mix beach blasts, forest rambles, and weather-whipped resilience, this spot’s a gem. Can’t wait to go back – next time, I’m packing better waterproofs!
