About St Andrews
Twenty sodden minutes later, we rolled into the charming village of St Michaels, and there it was: this spacious period home on the edge of it all, looking every bit the perfect bolthole for our big group of 12. It’s the sort of place that screams family get-togethers or matey holidays, pet-friendly too, which was a godsend for our daft Labrador, who’d been whining the whole way. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, smashing, straight off. The front door swung open to a warm hug of a hallway, with enough room to swing a cat (or three hyper kids) without anyone bumping elbows. We dumped the bags, and the other half cracked open a cheeky bottle of fizz while the dog claimed his spot by the Aga. That first evening, after shaking off the travel chaos, we wandered down to the friendly village inn – just a hop away – for pints and pie. Proper homely vibes, with locals nodding hellos like we were regulars. Next morning, the real magic hit: a quick five-mile jaunt to Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve. We parked up, boots on, and plunged into the pine forest, the kids whooping at every squirrel. Out on the sand dunes, we spotted oystercatchers and seals bobbing offshore – pure tranquillity, with the wind whipping our faces and resetting our souls. I paused for a moment, watching my lot charge ahead, and had one of those gentle what-a-lucky-sod-I-am reflections. Life’s too short for mishaps to linger, eh? Later, we kept it local with a family scoot to Craigtoun Country Park, eight-and-a-half miles of swings, boating ponds, and ice creams that tasted of childhood. No need for far-flung jaunts when this neck of the woods delivers like that. Back at the house, evenings blurred into board games, takeaways from the inn, and collapsing in front of the telly, the dog snoring contentedly. That arrival kerfuffle? Forgotten in a flash. If you’re after a base that feels like a hug – roomy, welcoming, and slap-bang in golf-and-beach country without the St Andrews scrum – this is it. We’re already plotting a return. |
