About St Andrews
I’ll never forget the drive up to St Monans – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car in Edinburgh, full of beans after a cheeky breakfast roll, with me navigating via a dodgy phone signal that kept dropping us into fields. Then, just past Leven, disaster struck: a rogue seagull dive-bombed the windscreen, splattering it with what I can only describe as abstract art. Cue panicked swerves, me yelling “Watch the bird!” while my other half gripped the wheel like it was a lifeline. We pulled over in a layby, laughing hysterically as we scrubbed it off with wet wipes, feathers still fluttering about. Typical us, turning a two-hour jaunt into high drama. But honestly, that mishap set the tone – chaotic start, perfect payoff.

By the time we trundled into the East Neuk of Fife, the sun was dipping low over the sea, and my heart did a little flip. St Monans is one of those places that hits you right in the feels: a historic fishing village with colourful cottages hugging the harbour, fishing boats bobbing gently like they’re on a permanent siesta. We were buzzing with anticipation, wondering if our holiday let would live up to the snaps. Nestled in a peaceful private spot with splendid uninterrupted views over that very harbour, it turned out to be a total gem – cosy, welcoming, with big windows framing the water like a living painting. First impressions? Blown away. Stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm hug after the road madness; everything just right for kicking back.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out to soak it in. The harbour’s a proper charmer – pretty little thing with benches perfect for people-watching the locals mending nets or chatting over fish suppers. A short wander took us to the beach, sand still gritty underfoot from the tide, and the Fife Coastal Path literally passes the door, tempting us with walks along cliff tops and wildflower meadows. I stood there, sea breeze tousling my hair, thinking, “This is it, isn’t it? The reset button.” Gentle self-reflection moment: amid the arrival kerfuffle, I realised I’d been wound tighter than a fisherman’s line back home. Here, with the waves whispering and gulls (safely distant) wheeling overhead, it all melted away.

Next morning, we hit the village proper. Quirky shops selling handmade fudge and driftwood art, friendly pubs dishing up pints and pies – we grabbed a table at one overlooking the water, toasting our survival. The area’s a haven for ambling: we cycled a gentle loop along the coast, past hidden coves, stopping for crab sandwiches that tasted like they’d leapt straight from the sea. Water sports? Ellie’s right nearby for kayaking if you’re feeling brave – we stuck to paddling in the shallows, giggling like kids. Even a spot of sea fishing from the harbour wall, rods borrowed from a chatty local, yielded mackerel for supper. It’s all so unpretentious, miles from St Andrews’ golf buzz but close enough for a day trip if the mood strikes.

Staying here was pure magic – that harbour view from the lounge became our nightly ritual, wine in hand, plotting tomorrow’s jaunt. If you’re after a base that’s equal parts relaxing and adventure-ready, with beaches, paths, and village vibes on tap, this is your spot. Our messy arrival? Best story of the trip. Can’t wait to go back.
