About Wee Jules By The Sea.

Anstruther, principal village on Fife’s East Neuk coast, was once two burghs split by the Dreel Burn. Founded as a fishing village, it boomed in the Scottish herring industry. The Scottish Fisheries Museum by the harbour charts its history. Now tourist-friendly, it boasts cafés, bars, galleries, restaurants and the award-winning Anstruther Fish Bar. Harbour trips go to the Isle of May for puffins and seals. Edinburgh’s across the Forth; the Secret Bunker’s nearby. Enjoy coastal walks and golf at St Andrews.

About St Andrews
I’ll never forget the drive up to Anstruther from St Andrews – we’d rented a car in town, thinking it’d be a doddle, but about halfway there, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down some narrow back lane that was more puddle than path. Sheets of rain hammered the windscreen, and I was convinced we’d end up in someone’s cow field. But we laughed it off, cranked up the radio, and eventually emerged, soggy but grinning, right on the coast.

Pulling up to the holiday cottage, my heart did a little flip – it looked like the perfect seaside bolthole, all bright and inviting against the grey Firth of Forth. Stepping inside, it was even better: a riot of blues and aquas with under-the-sea touches everywhere, from cheeky fishy ornaments to wave-patterned cushions. The spacious sitting room begged you to flop onto the comfy sofa with a cuppa and the telly, while the stylish kitchen made me itch to whip up fish and chips. There’s even a proper dining spot right there, all relaxed and family-friendly. For couples or a gang with kids, it’s spot on – our base for a proper Scottish coastal jaunt.

First morning, the sun cracked through, so we laced up our boots for a brisk walk along Anstruther harbour. The fresh sea air hit like a tonic, gulls wheeling overhead as we ambled past the fishing boats, nipping into a chippy for supplies (proper Scotland, that). Feeling bold, we pushed on towards St Andrews along the Fife Coastal Path – about four miles of stunning clifftop views, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and the odd seal popping up to say hello. My other half powered ahead, but I was puffing a bit, admitting to myself that maybe those extra biscuits back home weren’t the best training. Still, that moment of gentle huffing brought a smile – holidays are for slowing down, aren’t they?

By afternoon, classic British weather kicked in: wind whipping up, skies turning moody. Our planned longer hike to Cellarhead Bay got scrubbed – no one fancies a face full of horizontal rain. Instead, we pivoted to a sheltered wander around the harbour walls, dodging sudden squalls and laughing when a massive wave splashed us proper. It forced us cosy: back at the cottage, we huddled in the sitting room, tea in hand, watching the storm rage outside. Next day, blue skies again! We tackled the path the other way, towards Pittenweem, scrambling over dunes and peeking into rock pools. The weather played its tricks once more – sun one minute, drizzle the next – but it made the walks electric, every turn a surprise.

Those hikes, dictated by the mercurial Fife skies, were the holiday’s heartbeat. We covered miles without even trying, from harbour strolls to cliff-edge adventures, all within easy reach of our sea-themed haven. It’s got me reflecting: sometimes the best trips aren’t planned to death, but shaped by a bit of rain and a good pair of wellies. If you’re after that coastal magic near St Andrews, this is your spot – weather and all.
