We’d barely made it past the Forth Bridge when the satnav decided we were going on a scenic detour through every farm track in Fife. By the time we finally pulled up outside the little whitewashed cottage in Anstruther, the children were bickering and I was quietly questioning every life choice that had led me to trust Google Maps on a bank holiday. Still, the moment the engine stopped and we stepped out into that salty air, the stress seemed to lift on its own. The cottage sat just across the road from the harbour, its front door painted a cheerful blue that matched the sky, and the low evening sun was already turning the water gold.

Inside, everything felt instantly welcoming. The kitchen was small but perfectly stocked with the essentials—kettle, toaster, and a reassuringly battered teapot—and the living room had that proper, lived-in feel with squashy sofas and a wood burner already laid ready for later. Upstairs, the three bedrooms were simple and spotless, each with views either over the rooftops or straight out to the sea. We dumped our bags, changed into hoodies, and wandered the two minutes down to the beach with the dog, who immediately decided the sand was the best thing he’d ever encountered.

That first evening set the tone for the whole stay. We bought fish and chips from the harbour and ate them on a bench watching the boats bob about, the children collecting shells while I tried not to think about the work emails still sitting in my inbox. The next morning we woke to the sound of gulls and the smell of toast, then spent a lazy few hours exploring the little coastal path that runs from Anstruther towards St Andrews. It’s only a couple of miles if you fancy it, but we never made it that far; instead we turned back when someone spotted a seal, which was excuse enough for another sit-down with a flask of tea.

By the second day we’d fallen into an easy rhythm—mornings on the beach with buckets and spades, afternoons back at the cottage with books and board games, and evenings cooking simple meals while the rain pattered on the windows. There’s something about being so close to the water that makes everything feel slower, more manageable. I caught myself, at one point, standing at the bedroom window just watching the tide come in and realising I hadn’t checked my phone in hours. That small, ordinary moment felt like the real point of the trip.

We left with sandy shoes, slightly damp coats, and the vague promise to ourselves that we’d do this sort of thing more often. The cottage hadn’t been flashy or full of mod-cons, but it had given us exactly what we needed: space to breathe, a beach on the doorstep, and the gentle reminder that sometimes the best holidays are the ones where nothing much happens at all.
