I’d only been in the car for twenty minutes when the satnav decided we were taking the scenic route, which is a polite way of saying we ended up on a single-track lane behind a tractor doing eight miles an hour. By the time we finally turned into the little lane that leads to Lyra, the sun was already sliding low over the Firth of Forth and my phone was insisting we were still ten minutes away. We parked, hauled the bags out, and promptly discovered that the key safe was exactly where the instructions said—only I’d managed to type the code in backwards twice before the latch finally clicked.

Inside, the cottage felt instantly welcoming: a bright little kitchen with a kettle already filled, a living room that looked straight out onto the dunes, and a bedroom whose window caught the last of the evening light. We dropped everything, made tea in mismatched mugs, and wandered out onto the small patio with its two wooden chairs. The sea was just a short scramble down the path, the tide out and the sand still warm underfoot. We didn’t bother with plans; the only agenda was to sit there until the midges got bold.

The next morning began with that same gentle nothing-to-do feeling. I pulled a deckchair onto the grass, opened the book I’d been meaning to finish for months, and promptly fell asleep after two pages. My partner appeared with coffee and the news that the tide was perfect for a barefoot wander, so we ambled down to the beach, shoes in hand, stopping every few metres to inspect shells or watch the oystercatchers skitter along the wet sand. We found a driftwood log, sat for an hour watching the waves, and only moved when the sun crept behind a cloud and reminded us lunch was waiting back at the cottage.

By afternoon the weather had settled into that soft, golden Scottish sunshine that feels like it might last forever. We spread a blanket on the lawn, passed a packet of shortbread between us, and did the important work of deciding whether to read, nap, or simply watch the clouds. Occasionally one of us would suggest “a proper walk,” but the suggestion always dissolved into another cup of tea. The beach kept calling, though, and we answered in the laziest way possible—bare feet, slow pace, stopping whenever a particularly interesting piece of sea glass appeared.

It struck me, somewhere between the third and fourth mug of tea, how rare it feels to let a day unfold without a single tick-box. At home I’m forever measuring hours against productivity; here the only measurement was how many times the kettle had boiled. The mishap with the key safe already felt like ancient history, replaced by the quiet satisfaction of doing very little and somehow feeling completely restored. As the light faded and we carried our chairs back inside, I caught myself smiling at the thought that the best part of the holiday might simply be remembering how to stop.
