About St Andrews
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot near St Andrews – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Edinburgh turned into a right faff. We’d set off full of beans, playlist blasting some cracking indie tunes, dreaming of lazy days by the coast. But no, halfway there, the satnav decided to have a hissy fit, rerouting us down some winding back lane that looked like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Then, just to top it off, I missed the turn for the property and ended up doing a three-point turn in a puddle the size of Loch Ness. Splattered in mud up to the hubcaps, we finally pulled up, both of us giggling like idiots despite the stress. Anticipation had been building all morning – visions of cosy nights in and golf links on the horizon – and honestly, that chaotic arrival only made the relief sweeter.

Stepping through the door of this gorgeous little holiday home near Cupar, just 1.1 miles away, we were hit with the best first impressions. It’s the sort of romantic retreat that screams ‘switch off and chill’, perfect for a couple’s getaway or even a golfing jaunt with St Andrews course so close by. Ground-floor living everywhere, which was a godsend after lugging bags through the rain. The open-plan living area welcomed us like an old mate – plump sofa begging us to flop down, Smart TV ready for a binge session of whatever rubbish we fancied. We cracked open a couple of tins, sank into the cushions, and just breathed it all in. Holiday spirit? Instant.

That first evening, after shaking off the road woes, we fired up the private hot tub out back. Blimey, sinking into those bubbling jets with a GandT in hand, watching the Fife countryside fade into dusk – pure magic. No wonder it’s billed as having all the home comforts; it felt like our own little haven. Next morning, we wandered into Cupar for a proper Scottish brekkie at a wee café – bacon roll and a flat white that hit the spot. Feeling peckish again later, we nipped to a local farm shop for fresh scones and clotted cream, scoffing them on the sofa while debating our next move.

Of course, I had my moment of gentle self-reflection over coffee that first afternoon. There I was, mid-30s, still getting in a flap over a daft satnav glitch, when really, these mini mishaps are what make trips memorable. No five-star polish here – just real, unpretentious bliss. We ambled down to St Andrews’ beaches that afternoon, windswept and glorious, kicking sand about like kids before heading back for more hot tub time. Evenings blurred into easy dinners cooked up in the well-kitted kitchen, telly on low, feet up. It’s funny how a spot so near the famous golf haunts can feel worlds away from the hustle – intimate, restorative, spot-on for recharging.

By the end of our stay, that messy arrival was the best story we brought home. If you’re after a base that nails the holiday vibe without the faff, this is it. Can’t wait to go back.
