About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive over to Anglesey – we’d packed the car to the gills with enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes that had me gripping the wheel like it was my last lifeline. A rogue sheep decided to photobomb our progress by parking itself bang in the middle of the road, staring us down as if we were the intruders. Typical Anglesey welcome, I suppose – a bit of rural drama to get the blood pumping before the relaxation kicked in.

By the time we rolled up, the anticipation was bubbling over. We’d been dreaming of this getaway for weeks, just the two of us escaping the daily grind for some proper downtime. And blimey, first impressions didn’t disappoint. Pulling into the drive of this spacious, detached cottage felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. There it was, all cosy and inviting, with a private swim spa hot tub gazing out over the rolling North Wales countryside – our very own slice of luxury without a soul in sight. Inside, a welcoming woodburner was begging for a fire, and the rooms? Pure indulgence, every corner screaming comfort.

We wasted no time settling in. First evening, we cracked open a bottle of wine by that hot tub, bubbles fizzing away as the sun dipped low over the hills. The warmth seeped into our bones, washing away the journey’s stresses. It was one of those moments where you catch yourself thinking, ‘Why don’t we do this more often?’ – a gentle nudge that life’s too short not to prioritise these simple joys.

Next morning, we ambled the short two-mile hop to Menai Bridge for a mooch around the cafes. Grabbed flaky croissants and strong coffee from a spot overlooking the strait, watching boats bob about. Beaumaris was calling too, just 4.5 miles down the road, so off we went for fish and chips wrapped in paper, eaten on the pier with gulls eyeing us hopefully. No grand plans, just that easy rhythm of cottage life – a bit of chaos when we realised we’d left the woodburner flue half-open and got a faceful of smoke (cue much flapping of tea towels and laughter), but that’s the charm, isn’t it?

Afternoons were for pottering: gentle coastal walks along nearby paths, dipping toes in the sea at low tide, or just lounging with books and the spa’s jets massaging away any lingering tension. One evening, we lit the woodburner properly this time, roasted marshmallows till they were gooey disasters, and chatted about nothing and everything. No kids, no schedules – pure, unfiltered us-time.

Reflecting back, it hit me how these breaks remind you what matters: the quiet luxuries, the shared giggles over minor mishaps, the sheer bliss of unplugging. Anglesey’s got that magic – close enough to nibble at civilisation in Menai Bridge or Beaumaris, but far enough to feel worlds away. If you’re after a relaxed couple’s retreat, this corner of North Wales is gold dust. We’re already plotting a return.
