I’ll never forget the drive over to Anglesey – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the mainland turned into a right faff when the sat-nav decided to play silly buggers just as we crossed the Menai Suspension Bridge. The sun was dipping low, painting the water all golden, and you could practically feel the stress melting off us. First impressions? Spot on. It looked every bit the cosy retreat we’d been craving after months of slogging away at work.

We bundled in, dumped the bags, and straight away cracked open a bottle of fizz on the terrace – those views demanded it. The kids were straight out exploring the garden, clambering over logs and pretending to be explorers, while we just sat there gobsmacked. No traffic noise, just birdsong and the distant lap of the strait. Here I was, knackered from the drive but buzzing with how a bit of chaos often leads to the best bits. We could’ve been anywhere, but this spot? It’s got that magic that makes you forget the mishaps and just breathe.
