About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive over to Anglesey last autumn – the leaves were turning that gorgeous coppery gold, carpeting the A55 like a proper Welsh welcome mat. Me and the family piled into the car from Cheshire, kids buzzing in the back with crisps and iPads, but about halfway across the bridge, disaster struck: a rogue flock of sheep decided our lane was their personal catwalk. We slammed on the brakes, hearts in mouths, and ended up tailing a farmer herding them back to the hills. Classic Anglesey chaos, but it had us laughing by the time we rolled into Rhosneigr, the sea air already whipping through the windows with that crisp, briny tang of October.

Pulling up to our second-floor apartment in the Tides Reach development felt like stumbling on a hidden gem right in the heart of the village. From the moment we stepped into the hallway, shaking off the drizzle from our coats, it was love at first sight – this contemporary bolthole with its two bedrooms (a comfy double and a twin for the lads) screamed family getaway. We dumped the bags in the ample storage and flopped into the sitting room, that snug spot with the Juliet balcony begging us to fling open the doors. The autumn breeze rushed in, carrying the salty whisper of the Irish Sea just down the lane, and we cracked open a flask of tea while watching the light fade over the dunes. First impressions? Spot on – it was the perfect perch to soak up the seasonal magic.

Autumn shaped every minute of our stay, turning the usual Rhosneigr jaunts into something properly poetic. We wandered the broad sandy stretches of Traeth Llydan beach, just a short stroll away, where the tide pools glittered under weak October sun and the waves crashed with a fresh, invigorating roar. No summer crowds meant we had it mostly to ourselves – the kids poked at crabs hiding in the kelp, their cheeks rosy from the chill wind that nipped at our ears. One afternoon, we crunched through windfall apples at a nearby orchard pick-your-own, the air thick with that earthy, overripe scent, and turned them into a wonky crumble back at the flat. Even the village pub down the road felt cozier in the gloaming, with real ales and hearty stews chasing away the damp.

But it was the sunsets that stole the show. From the balcony, we’d huddle under blankets as the sky blazed orange and pink over the bay, the sea turning molten. One evening, I caught myself just staring, mug in hand, thinking how these shorter days force you to slow down – no manic beach marathons, just quality time, stories swapped over board games as rain pattered the windows. I’m usually rushing about like a headless chicken at home, but here, autumn’s mellow vibe had me reflecting: maybe I need more of this quiet recharge in my life.

We squeezed in a brisk cycle along the coastal path to Cymyran Beach, leaves swirling like confetti, and a misty hike up to the old windmill at Llanfaelog for panoramic views – all within easy reach, no car needed. The season’s cooler edge made everything sharper, more vivid: the gorse blooming defiant yellow, seals barking from the rocks. Packing up on the last day, with frost nipping our noses, I felt properly gutted to leave. If you’re chasing that autumnal glow-up in Anglesey, this corner of Rhosneigr’s your spot – bracing walks, cosy nights, and memories that stick like sea salt on your skin.
