About Anglesey
We'd been dreaming of a proper family getaway to Anglesey for months, you know, the kind where you swap the daily grind for salty sea air and lazy days by the coast. Packing up the car with two excited kids, a boot full of snacks, and my other half's endless supply of beach reads, we set off from Cheshire early doors. But typical us – about halfway there, disaster struck when I took a wrong turn onto some narrow back lane, convinced my phone's satnav had gone rogue. Twenty minutes of circling sheep fields later, with the kids chanting "Are we there yet?" like a bad road trip mantra, we finally emerged onto the main road, laughing at my daft sense of direction. Note to self: trust the signs next time, not my gut.

Pulling into Beaumaris just as the sun dipped low over the Menai Strait, my heart did a little flip – those first impressions were spot on. The town buzzed with that perfect holiday hum: families strolling the promenade, ice cream cones in hand, and the castle looming like something out of a storybook. Our spot was this cracking duplex apartment right above a brilliant ice cream parlour, smack in the heart of it all, just a stone's throw from the seafront. Stepping inside, it felt like instant home – spacious kitchen begging for family feasts, a cosy sitting room with plush sofas, a smart telly, and a woodburning stove that promised snug evenings. Upstairs, the bedrooms were just right for our crew of five, with everything light and airy, perfect for unwinding after a day out.

First morning, we wandered down to the pier, rods in hand for a spot of mackerel fishing – the kids reeled in a few tiny ones, which we released with cheers and high-fives. Lunch was fish and chips from a beachside van, eaten on the pebbles while watching boats bob in the bay. Beaumaris Pier's such a gem for that; simple, no-fuss fun that had us all grinning like loons. Afternoons meant paddling in the shallows at low tide, building wonky sandcastles that inevitably collapsed under the boys' enthusiastic "tsunami" waves – pure cottage life chaos, sand everywhere, but who cares?

Evenings were the best bit. I'd rustle up a pasta bake in that fully kitted kitchen, we'd pile into the dining room reliving the day's antics, then flop in front of the stove with hot chocolates. One night, as rain pattered the windows, we played board games till bedtime, the woodburner crackling away. I caught myself reflecting quietly – in the rush of school runs and work, we forget these moments: the kids' giggles, that shared warmth. It's the small stuff that sticks.

We nipped to the beach at Benllech one afternoon, just a short drive away, for fossil hunting and ice creams (again – those parlour ones downstairs were dangerously addictive). No grand plans, just pottering, crabbing off the rocks, and early nights. Anglesey's got that magic for relaxed family breaks – unhurried, joyful, with a dash of lovely disorder. Can't wait to go back; it's the kind of place that recharges your batteries without you even noticing.
