About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive over to Trearddur Bay last month – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, waterproofs, and enough crisps to last a siege, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. Me, the missus, and the two lads, all singing along to some dodgy 90s playlist. But about 20 minutes from Holyhead, disaster struck: a massive pothole on the A55 decided to have a pop at our tyre. Flat as a pancake. We pulled over, faffed about with the spare, and laughed it off as I got absolutely soaked changing it in the drizzle. “Welcome to Wales,” I muttered, already plotting revenge hikes to make up for the delay.

By the time we rolled into Trearddur Bay, the sun was peeking through, and blimey, what a first impression. We’d booked this cracking second-floor apartment right in the heart of it all, the sort of place the owners clearly love themselves – family vibes everywhere. Parked up easy with space for both cars, then lugged the bags up the stairs, hearts racing a bit from the effort. Stepping inside, we were hit with this spacious living-dining room, all plush corner sofa and armchair, Smart TV ready for footie, and those sea views? Straight out the window, like the bay was posing just for us. A quick stroll down to the beach confirmed it: sand underfoot, waves lapping, and the local shop just yards away for milk and papers. Perfect.

We were there for the walks, you see – Anglesey’s got some belters around here, all rugged coast and empty beaches. First morning, weather was glorious, blue skies begging for it. We headed out along the coastal path towards Porth Dafarch, about a mile or so west. The lads scampered ahead, chucking stones into rock pools, while we ambled, spotting seals bobbing offshore. That fresh sea air? Magic. We picnicked on the cliffs, sandwiches tasting like heaven, proper living-the-dream stuff.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, doesn’t it? Next day, we planned the loop around Penrhos Beach, another easy couple of miles east, with its dunes and hidden coves. Set off full of beans, only for the heavens to open mid-stride. Sudden downpour, wind whipping in from the Irish Sea. We ducked under a rocky overhang, laughing like idiots as hail pelted down. Plans B through Z kicked in: back to the apartment for hot teas and board games on that comfy sofa, gazing at the stormy views turning dramatic. Turned out better than the hike – cosy family time, stories flying.

By the end of the week, we’d nailed a few more: a blustery beach ramble at Traeth Crigyll, dodging jellyfish, and a calmer sunset stroll right from the door along the bay. Weather flipped from sun to squall daily, forcing us to adapt – one minute coastal paths, next impromptu living-room Olympics. Made me reflect a bit, actually: holidays aren’t about sticking to the plan, are they? They’re about those soggy laughs and sea-sprayed cheeks. Trearddur Bay delivered in spades – we’re already plotting a return, come rain or shine.
