About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive over to Trearddur Bay in Anglesey – a proper British road trip with a classic twist. We’d piled into the car in Liverpool, full of beans after a fry-up, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a massive traffic jam just past the Britannia Bridge. Cue 45 minutes of staring at the Menai Strait, engines idling, while I munched through half a packet of Hobnobs in frustration. “Typical,” I grumbled to my mate Dave, who was navigating. But as we finally rolled into the bay, the sun breaking through like it knew we needed cheering up, all was forgiven. That first glimpse of the sea sparkling against the hills? Pure magic. Anticipation bubbled up – this was going to be brilliant.

Pulling into the private parking spot for our top-floor apartment felt like arriving at a mate’s secret hideaway. It’s this delightful spot with cracking countryside and sea views, just a short stroll from the beach and a couple of handy shops. We kicked off our shoes in the hallway and tumbled into the sitting room, where those two plush sofas begged us to flop down. Smart TV flickering on, we debated a quick game on the console before hunger won out for fish and chips from the local.

Next morning, we were itching for a hike along the coastal path – Trearddur’s got some of the best around, rugged cliffs dropping to white sands. Weather app said clear skies, so off we went, boots laced, past Porth Dafarch beach. The views were stunning, seals bobbing in the waves below, gulls wheeling overhead. We laughed our way up the gentle incline, wind whipping our cheeks, feeling alive. But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. By lunchtime, fat raindrops started, turning into a proper downpour. Plans for a full circuit to Penrhos Beach? Scrubbed. We dashed back, soaked to the skin, collapsing in hysterics on the sofas.

Undeterred, we adapted like pros. The next day dawned drizzly, so we opted for a shorter loop around the bay itself – flat, easy, but with waves crashing dramatically and wildflowers nodding in the breeze. Dave slipped on a muddy patch, arms flailing like a startled penguin, and we howled with laughter. “Graceful as ever,” I teased. Afternoon brought a sneaky sunbeam, luring us out for sunset strolls along the shore, picking up shells and dodging rock pools. Rain or shine, those walks cleared the head, made you notice the little things – like how the light dances on the water.

One evening, nursing cups of tea after another impromptu shower cut our hike short, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Holidays like this remind you life’s not about grand plans, but rolling with the punches – or the rain, in our case. No epic treks to boast about, but loads of fresh air, daft stories, and that cosy apartment as home base. Anglesey’s walks are forgiving like that; even when the weather plays silly buggers, they deliver. We left fitter, happier, already plotting a return. Proper tonic.
