About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive over to Anglesey – we’d packed the car to the gills with kids’ toys, wellies, and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. Picture this: me white-knuckling the wheel as a rogue sheep decided to photobomb our progress, forcing a full stop while the little ones cheered from the back like it was the best circus ever. A proper Welsh welcome, that was, and by the time we rolled up, my anticipation was buzzing – would it live up to the cosy holiday dreams?

Pulling into the off-road parking, we were gobsmacked straight away. There it was, this cracking first-floor apartment on the edge of the village, all contemporary vibes with a veranda begging for sunset drinks. We hauled the bags up the open-tread stairs, kids giggling at the echoey steps, and stepped into a space that felt like a hug. Spacious, bright, with a kitchen-diner that screamed “rustle up a feast”. First job: unpack the shopping from the village Co-op (they’ve got all the essentials, bless ’em), shove a pasta bake in the oven, and plonk ourselves at the table for two – well, table for four, really, with elbows flying everywhere.

That first evening set the tone perfectly. As the sun dipped over the fields, we cracked open some fizz on the veranda, watching the light fade while the boys chased each other round the garden below. It was pure bliss, that simple shift from city chaos to this peaceful pocket of Anglesey. No grand plans, just us soaking it in. The bedroom was a gem too – airy and roomy, doubling as a chill-out spot with telly for rainy afternoons (and boy, did we need it later).

Next day, we wandered down to the Menai Strait, just a short hop away, skimmed stones and built lopsided sandcastles on the pebbly bits. The kids were in their element, faces smeared with ice cream from the Newborough Forest café we hit later – proper family madness, with sand in every crevice and laughter non-stop. Evenings were cottage life at its daftest: me burning toast in the sleek kitchen while trying to wrangle bath time, then piling into the walk-in wardrobe to “hide” from monsters. One night, I caught myself staring out at the stars from the veranda, wine in hand, thinking how these daft little moments – the spills, the squabbles, the sheer joy of it – are what recharge the batteries. In the rush of normal life, you forget how good it feels to just *be*, don’t you?

We pottered to Plas Newydd gardens too, not far off, letting the lads run wild among the trees while we munched picnic sarnies. No fancy tours, just easy rambles and fish and chips from the local spot back in the village. It was relaxed, ramshackle heaven – the kind of holiday where the best bits are the unplanned ones, like impromptu den-building in the bedroom-sitting room. Anglesey’s got that magic for family breaks; close enough for day trips, far enough to feel like your own little world. We left with full hearts (and a car full of laundry), already plotting the next trip. If you’re after simple pleasures amid the gentle chaos, this is your spot.
