We set off from the ferry with the kind of optimism that usually precedes minor disasters, and sure enough the satnav decided the last mile was best tackled via a farm track that wasn’t so much a road as a suggestion. By the time we bumped to a halt outside Afallon, the boot was rattling like a maraca and I’d developed a new appreciation for suspension. The cottage sat just above the beach path, whitewashed walls glowing in the late light, and the moment we stepped inside the faint smell of woodsmoke and sea air told us we’d landed somewhere that didn’t expect us to do very much at all.

The first proper decision of the holiday was whether to unpack or simply abandon the bags by the door and head straight down to the sand. The bags lost. Ten minutes later we were sitting on a low wall with takeaway coffee from the village, watching the tide ease in across a stretch of pale, empty beach that felt almost private. A couple of locals wandered past with a dog that clearly believed every pebble belonged to it, but otherwise it was just us, the gulls, and the occasional soft thud of a wave. We stayed until the light turned that particular Welsh gold that makes everything look slightly enchanted, then wandered back for a supper of whatever happened to be in the fridge.

Next morning the plan was to “get out and explore,” but the sun had other ideas. We dragged two mismatched chairs onto the little patio, cracked open the books we’d both been meaning to finish for months, and promptly forgot about exploring altogether. Every so often one of us would stand up, wander down the path for a paddle, then return with damp trouser hems and a report on the temperature of the Irish Sea. The cottage made it dangerously easy to keep this up; the kettle was always within reach, the wifi was just strong enough for the odd weather check, and the sofa by the window caught the afternoon light perfectly for an unapologetic nap.

By the third day we’d perfected the art of moving very slowly. Mornings began with the short walk to the shop for fresh bread and the local paper, followed by a beach circuit that took roughly an hour if you counted every interesting piece of driftwood. Afternoons dissolved into reading, half-hearted attempts at a crossword, and the occasional debate about whether fish and chips from the van counted as cooking. I’d come expecting to tick off coastal paths and maybe a castle, yet found myself oddly content watching the tide turn twice a day and noticing how the colour of the water changed with each cloud.

There’s a quiet satisfaction in realising you don’t actually need to achieve anything on holiday. Afallon seemed to know this already; it offered just enough comfort to make doing nothing feel like the right choice, and just enough view to make you glad you’d bothered to look up from your book. By the time we loaded the car again—slightly sandier, definitely slower—I’d stopped feeling guilty about the empty itinerary. Sometimes the best part of getting away is remembering how to stay still.
