We’d barely made it off the ferry at Holyhead when the satnav decided we were in the mood for a detour, sending us down a single-track lane that ended in a farmyard full of curious sheep. By the time we’d reversed out—much to the amusement of a passing tractor driver—it was nearly dusk, and the October light had already turned that soft, silvery grey that only seems to happen on Anglesey in autumn. Still, the moment we pulled up outside Bodior Garden Cottage, the little whitewashed walls and low slate roof looked so welcoming that the earlier detour felt almost planned.

The air smelled of salt and damp leaves, and a light breeze carried the sound of waves from just beyond the dunes. We’d chosen this shoulder season deliberately, hoping for quieter beaches and lower prices, yet the cottage felt even cosier because of it. A basket of logs sat by the wood burner, and the owner had left a note suggesting we light it straight away; the evenings were drawing in fast, and the chill crept under doors the way it always does once the clocks go back.

After unpacking, we wandered the short path to the beach, scarves buttoned high. The tide was out, revealing wide stretches of damp sand dotted with seaweed and the odd stranded jellyfish. A few dog-walkers nodded hello, but otherwise we had the stretch to ourselves—an unexpected luxury after the summer crowds we’d imagined. My partner joked that we’d packed for “crisp walks and pub fires,” and the weather seemed determined to prove him right; by the time we returned, the first spots of rain had begun to speckle the windows.

Inside, the cottage felt instantly like home. The kitchen was stocked with local Welsh cakes and a pint of milk, and the living room’s low beams made everything feel smaller and warmer. We cooked a simple supper while rain tapped the glass, then sat with mugs of tea watching flames catch in the burner. It struck me, watching the firelight flicker across the old stone hearth, how much of the trip’s charm came from timing. In July we might have been outside until late, but October gave us permission to slow down, to enjoy the indoors as much as the view.

The next morning brought watery sunshine and a fresh wind that sent yellow leaves skittering across the garden. We strolled along the coastal path toward Rhoscolyn’s little bay, stopping to watch oystercatchers probing the shallows. The sea looked almost metallic under the shifting clouds, and I found myself thinking how different the same stretch of water feels from one month to the next. There’s a quiet satisfaction in catching a place between seasons—empty beaches, glowing sunsets, and the sense that you’ve slipped in just before the door closes for winter.
