About Anglesey
By the time we found the right turning and pulled up outside the little white cottage, the light had that soft, late-afternoon glow you only seem to get near the coast. The garden gate squeaked in a friendly way, and the first thing that hit me was the smell of salt and warm grass. From the doorstep you could already see a sliver of beach between the dunes, the tide just beginning to pull back and leave dark, glossy sand. Inside, everything felt ready for us: a kettle already filled, thick towels folded on the bed, and a note from the owner suggesting a short path down to the water if we fancied stretching our legs. We didn’t even unpack properly before heading out. The lane to the beach was only a couple of minutes’ walk, and as soon as our feet hit the sand the journey stress seemed to lift. The waves were gentle, the air cool and clean, and for a while we just stood there watching a couple of oystercatchers skitter along the shoreline. Back at the cottage the kitchen window framed the same view, and I found myself pausing with a mug of tea, thinking how rarely I actually stop and notice the simple things—like how good it feels to arrive somewhere and immediately feel lighter. Later, with the windows open and the sound of the sea drifting in, I caught myself wondering why it always takes a wonky wing mirror and a slightly ridiculous satnav moment to remind me that getting there is half the fun. |
