We set off from the ferry with the boot packed to bursting, convinced we’d timed our Anglesey break perfectly for early autumn. The sky stayed bright as we wound along the narrow lanes towards Daresfield, but the satnav decided to send us down a farm track that ended in a gate and a very surprised sheep. After a ten-point turn and some choice words from the passenger seat, we finally pulled up outside the little white cottage, cheeks pink from laughing and slightly late for our own holiday.

The first thing that struck me was how the season had already started to turn the garden. The hydrangeas were fading to soft rust, and a light breeze carried the scent of damp leaves and salt from the bay just beyond the dunes. Inside, the cottage felt cosy in a way that only cooler evenings can make it; the kettle was on within minutes and we stood at the window watching gulls wheel over the water while steam fogged the glass.

We’d chosen this week deliberately, wanting the quieter beaches and the chance to see the coast without the summer crowds. It paid off straight away. The next morning the tide was out far enough to walk the full curve of sand towards Cemaes, the air sharp enough to need a proper jumper but still bright enough for sunglasses. We collected a few shells that felt heavier with the damp, then stopped at the little shop for Welsh cakes still warm from the griddle. Back at Daresfield the patio caught the low sun beautifully, so we sat with mugs of tea and watched the light slide across the fields while a robin hopped along the fence.

By late afternoon the wind had picked up, carrying the first real hint of autumn chill. We lit the wood burner—something we’d never have done in July—and the room filled with that gentle crackle that makes you slow down without even noticing. I found myself thinking how easily we fill summer days with plans, yet here we were content just to watch the sky change colour over the sea. It felt like the season itself was suggesting we do less, and I was surprisingly happy to listen.

That first evening set the tone for the rest of the stay. We took short walks along the coastal path while the light lasted, then came back to cook simple meals and play cards by the fire. The days stayed mild but the nights drew in earlier, and each time the curtains were drawn it felt like closing the door on the outside world for a few hours. Even the small mishap on arrival seemed to belong to the same gentle rhythm; nothing dramatic, just a reminder that plans bend easily when the weather and the light are doing most of the deciding.

By the time we packed the car again, the garden had a light scattering of fallen leaves and the sea looked steelier under a thicker layer of cloud. We left with sand in the car mats and the faint smell of wood smoke in our jumpers, already talking about when we might come back—perhaps when the daffodils are out, or when the gorse is in full yellow again. For now, though, that first crisp week at Daresfield had done exactly what we’d hoped: given us a slower pace and the quiet satisfaction of watching the seasons turn right outside the window.
