We’d barely crossed the Menai Bridge when the satnav decided to test our patience, rerouting us down a single-track lane that narrowed with every bend. I was convinced we’d taken a wrong turn until the hedge suddenly gave way to a view of the sea and a neat whitewashed cottage tucked just above the dunes. That was our first sight of Hen Gilfach Stable, and after the detour it felt like we’d stumbled on it by accident rather than design.

The owners had left the key in a little lockbox by the gate, so we let ourselves in and immediately kicked off shoes on the cool slate floor. Sunlight poured through the low windows, catching on a vase of fresh flowers someone had thoughtfully placed on the kitchen table. Outside, the garden sloped gently toward a footpath that disappeared between marram grass, and we could already hear the soft hush of waves on the beach just a short walk away.

After a quick cup of tea from the well-stocked welcome tray, we wandered down to the shore with the kids running ahead, buckets in hand. The tide was out, leaving wide stretches of damp sand perfect for collecting shells and the odd bit of driftwood. We didn’t plan anything grand; it was enough to paddle in the shallows and watch the children build a lopsided sandcastle that the next wave gently claimed.

Back at the cottage, the evening light turned the white walls a soft gold. We cooked a simple pasta supper using local sausages from the village shop, then ate outside on the little patio while the breeze carried the faint smell of salt and cut grass. Later, wrapped in blankets, we watched the sky fade from peach to deep indigo, the only sounds the distant call of oystercatchers and the occasional creak of the stable door in the wind.

Lying in bed that first night, I found myself thinking how rarely we slow down enough to notice these small things—the warmth of a well-made bed, the quiet rhythm of waves, the way a child’s laughter seems louder when there’s nothing else competing for attention. It struck me that we’d only just arrived, yet the cottage already felt less like a place we were visiting and more like somewhere we belonged, if only for a few days.
