We’d barely made it off the ferry at Holyhead when the satnav decided to send us down a lane so narrow I had to fold the wing mirrors in. My partner, convinced we were lost, kept repeating “it’s just round the next bend,” until the next bend revealed a tractor coming the other way. We reversed into a passing place with all the grace of a three-point turn in a shoebox, laughing so hard the dog started barking at us from the back seat. By the time we pulled up at Hen Gilfach the sun was already sitting low over the fields, and the cottage looked exactly like the photos—whitewashed stone, slate roof, a little wooden gate that squeaked when you pushed it.

Inside, everything felt ready for doing nothing. The kettle was on the hob, the fridge already stocked with milk and a loaf from the shop in Cemaes, and the living-room window framed a strip of silver-blue sea between the dunes. We didn’t unpack properly; we just dropped the bags, changed into flip-flops, and wandered the hundred yards down to the beach with the dog. The tide was out, leaving a wide stretch of pale sand dotted with tiny shells. We walked maybe twenty minutes in one direction, then turned around because neither of us could be bothered to go farther.

Back at the cottage the afternoon stretched out like warm toffee. I’d packed three books and finished none of them; instead I kept putting the bookmark in different chapters while the sun moved across the garden. My partner dozed in the striped deckchair, occasionally waking to ask if I fancied a cuppa, then deciding the kettle could wait. The dog found a patch of sun on the flagstones and refused to move unless a seagull flew overhead. Every so often the breeze carried the clean, salty smell of the shore straight through the open door, and I realised I hadn’t checked my phone in hours.

That evening we ate bread and cheese on the little patio, watching the light fade over the headland. No plans for tomorrow, no rush to be anywhere. Just the quiet promise of another slow morning, another barefoot walk, another chapter I probably wouldn’t finish.
