About Anglesey
The air was crisp enough to make your nose tingle, but the sun still held a bit of warmth, and the sea below the garden looked like polished slate. We’d picked the shoulder season deliberately—cheaper rates, fewer people, and the chance to watch Anglesey turn its quieter colours. What we hadn’t counted on was how the shorter days would shape every little moment. After unloading the car in record time (the boot always seems to swallow half your luggage when it’s cold), we stepped inside to find the wood-burner already laid. A quick rummage for matches and we had a fire crackling before the kettle even boiled. Outside the big window, the tide was slipping out fast, leaving long, glistening stretches of sand that looked almost golden in the low sun. We wrapped up and wandered down the short path to the beach, scarves flapping. The sand was firmer than in summer, perfect for a brisk walk without sinking, and the only other footprints belonged to a lone dog-walker and his excitable spaniel. We paused to watch a small flock of oystercatchers skitter along the water’s edge, their orange beaks bright against the muted tones of the afternoon. Back at the cottage the light had already started to fade, so we lit a few lamps and settled with mugs of tea by the fire. The evenings draw in quickly here in November, but there’s something oddly comforting about knowing you’ve nowhere else to be. I found myself thinking how different this trip felt from our usual rushed summer breaks—less about ticking things off, more about simply noticing the shift in the weather and the slower rhythm it brought. Later we strolled along the coastal path a little way, the last streaks of pink still clinging to the horizon. The breeze carried that unmistakable mix of salt and woodsmoke, and for once neither of us reached for our phones. It was just us, the sea, and the knowledge that tomorrow would bring another short day, another fire to light, and another chance to watch the season do its quiet work. |
