About Anglesey
The front door opens straight into a bright, open living space where the sofa practically begs you to kick off your shoes. There’s a wood-burner in the corner that still smells faintly of last night’s fire, and the kitchen table is already laid with mismatched mugs as if it knew we’d need tea before we’d even unpacked. Upstairs, the bedrooms feel calm and airy, with crisp sheets and those little thoughtful touches—extra blankets folded at the foot of each bed and a bowl of Welsh cakes left on the sideboard. After a quick cuppa we wandered the hundred yards or so to the beach at Trearddur Bay. The tide was out, leaving a generous stretch of damp sand perfect for small feet and even smaller wellies. Our youngest spent a happy half-hour collecting what she insisted were “dragon scales” (really just shiny pebbles), while the rest of us simply stood and let the breeze do its work on the week’s worth of emails still rattling around our heads. Back at the cottage the garden proved just as inviting. A wooden bench sits in a sheltered spot that catches the last of the afternoon sun, and we claimed it with books, biscuits, and absolutely no plans. From there you can hear the low murmur of the sea and the occasional cry of gulls, but nothing louder—no traffic, no neighbours, just the sort of quiet that makes you realise how noisy normal life has become. Later, with fish and chips from the village shop warming our laps, we watched the sky turn that particular shade of pink only Anglesey seems to manage. The children were already negotiating who got the top bunk, and I found myself thinking how rarely we manage to slow down like this. It struck me, sitting there with salt on my fingers and sand still between my toes, that sometimes the best part of a holiday isn’t the grand adventures you plan, but the small, unplanned moments that arrive when you finally stop rushing to meet them. |
