We set off from the mainland with the kind of optimism that only appears when you’ve packed flip-flops for Wales. The satnav promised a simple last stretch along the coast road, but somewhere near the little turning for Trearddur Bay it decided we needed an impromptu tour of a farm track instead. By the time we bumped back onto tarmac, the car was wearing a fine coating of Anglesey mud and I was wearing an expression that said “this is fine, everything’s fine.”

Seaddler sat right on the edge of the dunes, a low white cottage that looked as though it had grown there rather than been built. The front door opened straight onto a patch of grass that sloped down to the path, and the moment we stepped out with our bags the sea air hit us—sharp, salty, and carrying the faint promise of rain that never quite arrived. Inside, the kitchen window framed nothing but water and sky, so we abandoned the unpacking and headed straight out.

Our first plan had been a proper coastal walk to South Stack, but the forecast flipped while the kettle was still boiling. Grey clouds rolled in like uninvited relatives, so we settled for the shorter cliff path that hugs the bay instead. It turned out to be perfect; the lower route kept us out of the worst of the wind and gave us endless excuses to stop and watch the waves smashing against the rocks below. Every few minutes a seal popped its head up, regarded us with mild surprise, then vanished again, which felt about as judgemental as the weather itself.

By midday the sun had shouldered its way back through, and suddenly it was warm enough for t-shirts. We followed the sandy track that runs behind the dunes, trainers filling with fine grit, until we reached the little cove where the water looked almost Caribbean if you squinted and ignored the temperature. We paddled anyway, yelping at the cold and laughing at ourselves for thinking the Irish Sea would ever feel tropical.

Later, with legs pleasantly tired, we wandered back along the same path we’d taken that morning. The light had turned soft and gold, the sort that makes even an ordinary stretch of gorse look cinematic. I found myself thinking how often I rush these first afternoons—charging off to tick off viewpoints—when really the best bit is just being here, slightly dishevelled from the journey, watching the tide decide what it wants to do next.

That evening we grilled sausages on the little patio while the sky put on its slow sunset show. No dramatic peaks or far-flung adventures, just the quiet satisfaction of a day that had started with a muddy detour and ended with sand between our toes. Sometimes the best coastal holidays are the ones that let the weather boss you around a bit.
