We’d barely made it off the Menai Bridge before the satnav decided to test our family’s patience. “Turn left in 200 yards,” it chirped, sending us down a lane so narrow the wing mirrors practically shook hands with the hedgerows. My husband swore softly while our youngest dissolved into giggles from the back seat, and before I knew it we were reversing into someone’s driveway to let a tractor pass. By the time we found the turning for Sgubor, the car was coated in a fine film of Welsh dust and we were all ready for a cuppa.

The cottage sat just a short walk from the shore, its whitewashed walls glowing in the late-afternoon light. We tumbled out, stretching cramped legs, and the first thing that hit me was the smell—salt, warm grass, and that faint, clean scent the tide leaves behind. The garden gate creaked in welcome, and inside, the kitchen still held a trace of someone’s baking from the morning. We dumped bags in the bedrooms, claimed beds with the usual squabbling over who got the view, then wandered straight back outside again.

The beach was only minutes away, reached by a sandy track that wound between dunes. The tide was out, leaving wide stretches of damp sand perfect for small feet and badly aimed frisbees. We kicked off shoes, letting the kids race ahead while we followed at a more dignified pace, stopping every few steps to collect shells or point out tiny crabs scuttling for cover. Later, back at Sgubor, we unpacked a hastily bought picnic of Welsh cakes and sausage rolls, spreading everything across the garden table as the sun dipped lower.

There’s something quietly magical about that first evening in a new place. I found myself lingering by the fence, watching the light fade over the water and listening to the gentle hush of waves, and I realised how rarely we manage to switch off like this. The mishap on the lane already felt like part of the story, the sort of small chaos that somehow makes the calm afterwards feel even better. Tomorrow we’d explore properly—maybe a stroll along the coastal path or a potter around the little shops in Menai Bridge—but for now it was enough to sit together, sandy and slightly sunburnt, with nowhere else we needed to be.
