About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive over to Anglesey – one of those classic British road trips where everything’s going swimmingly until it isn’t. We’d piled into the car in Liverpool, full of that buzzing anticipation, you know? Windows down, playlist on shuffle with some proper indie tunes, dreaming of salty sea air and zero alarm clocks. But about halfway across the bridge, disaster struck: a rogue seagull decided our windscreen was its personal canvas. Splatter central. We pulled over laughing (and slightly gagging), grabbed some wipes from a service station, and cracked on. By the time we turned off the main road, that little mishap felt like the perfect comedy opener to our holiday.

Winding down that picturesque private drive, bounded by ancient woodland, I could feel the shoulders dropping already. There it was at the end – this cosy cottage tucked into a magical 600-acre farm on the outskirts of Rhoscolyn. First impressions? Bloody brilliant, sorry, I mean spot on. It screamed “relax mode activated” from the off, with its welcoming vibe and that instant holiday glow. We’d booked it for the sheer joy of doing sod all, and it delivered in spades.

The heart of the place is this massive dining kitchen – a total game-changer for lazy days. Picture it: one of us faffing about cooking a lazy brunch (bacon sarnies, naturally), while the others sprawl at the table that seats ten easy or flop in the armchair by the woodburner. It’s got everything you need to whip up something decent without any hassle, which meant we spent hours there just chatting, sipping tea, and watching the world go by through the windows. No rush, no schedules – pure bliss.

And the garden? Oh mate, it was our personal haven. We’d wander out with mugs of coffee first thing, plonking ourselves on the benches surrounded by birdsong and those cheeky red squirrels darting about in the woods. I’d crack open a book – some trashy paperback I’d been saving – and lose hours under the trees, only breaking to stretch my legs with a gentle stroll along the farm paths. There are cracking walks right on the doorstep, nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for a pub lunch at one of the nearby spots in Rhoscolyn. Sandy beaches are a short hop away too, perfect for a mooch and a paddle if the mood took us, but mostly we didn’t bother. Why would you, when the cottage garden felt like its own little paradise?

Days blurred into this delicious rhythm of slowing right down. Reading in the sun, a cheeky GandT as the light faded, maybe firing up the woodburner for an evening of board games and takeaways. There was this one moment, staring out at the fields one afternoon, book forgotten on my lap, when it hit me: I’m knackered from real life, aren’t I? Always chasing the next thing. Here, doing bugger all felt revolutionary. No grand adventures, no Instagram frenzy – just us, the cottage, and that profound joy of proper rest. Anglesey’s got its wild beauty, sure, but for me, this was the holiday highlight: switching off completely. If you’re after the same, get yourself down there. You won’t regret it.
