About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive over to Anglesey last autumn – the leaves were turning that glorious coppery gold, carpeting the A55 like a crunchy welcome mat. Me, the missus, our two lads and the daft Labrador, all piled into the car with enough snacks to siege a castle. About halfway, disaster struck: a rogue flock of sheep decided our windscreen was the best spot for a family reunion. We swerved, hearts in mouths, but came out unscathed – just a bit of woolly excitement to kick off the holiday. By the time we trundled down the narrow lanes near Holyhead, the October sun was dipping low, painting everything in that soft, harvest glow that makes Wales feel like a proper postcard.

Pulling up to this quirky, sophisticated cottage, I was buzzing with that proper arrival anticipation – you know, wondering if it’d live up to the pics. Blimey, it exceeded it straight away. This white beauty sat there like it was waiting just for us, with its neatly fenced front lawn looking all inviting under the crisp blue sky, and a quaint private driveway perfect for unloading our mountain of gear without blocking the lane. One-storey layout, too, which was a godsend with the dog and kids charging about. We kicked off our wellies, hung up coats, and wandered in – instant cosiness, like stepping into a hug.

Autumn shaped the whole trip in the best way. Mornings started misty over the coast, just a short hop to South Stack cliffs where we’d watch puffins darting about (well, the RSPB hides were buzzing with birders, anyway). The sea was that moody grey-green, waves crashing dramatic-like against the rocks, but the air was sharp and invigorating – none of that muggy summer sweat. We’d pack a flask of tea and trek along the coastal path, the lads collecting conkers from the odd tree, while the dog sniffed every bramble. One day, we hit Newry Beach, right nearby, and built epic sandcastles as the tide rolled in slow and golden in the afternoon light. Even the rain played its part – a quick downpour sent us scarpering back for board games by the wood burner, mugs of hot chocolate in hand, listening to the patter on the roof. It felt proper seasonal magic, turning potential washouts into hygge heaven.

Evenings were pure bliss. We’d cook up stews with local spuds from the Holyhead market – autumn veg never tasted so good – and spill out onto the lawn for stargazing once the fog lifted. Eryri’s peaks loomed hazy in the distance, teasing snowy tops that made you glad for the woolly jumpers. I had a quiet moment one night, sat there with a cuppa, watching the kids conk out after a day of beachcombing. Made me reflect on how these simple getaways ground you – no screens, just family, nature, and that Welsh autumn chill reminding you life’s about the now, not the rush.

We left with sandy boots, full bellies, and plans to return next leaf-fall. Anglesey in October? Absolute cracker. If you’re after a pet-friendly haven that wraps you in seasonal charm, this corner’s calling your name.
