About Anglesey
I’ll never forget the drive over to Anglesey – we’d loaded up the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, kids buzzing in the back, and me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. About halfway across the Menai Bridge, disaster struck: a rogue seagull decided our windscreen was its personal canvas. Splattered and swearing under my breath (well, mildly tutting), we pulled over for a frantic clean-up with wet wipes and sheer determination. By the time we rolled into Cemaes Bay, hearts racing a bit, I was half-expecting the holiday to be cursed. But oh, what a turnaround.

Pulling up to the house, my jaw dropped. This wasn’t just any rental – it was truly luxurious, blending beautiful period details with heaps of modern tech. Underfloor heating kept the ground floor and all bathrooms toasty, whirlpool baths begged for a long soak, and those romantic four-poster beds? Pure indulgence. Private balconies overlooked the gardens, perfect for a morning coffee. The kitchen was a dream: farmhouse charm with period detailing, a gorgeous cranberry range cooker on a gas hob, three dishwashers, ample fridges and freezers – everything you’d need for lazy family feasts. WiFi, iPod docks, and games galore meant rainy days were sorted, while the large gardens were ideal for the kids to play football or hide and seek, and us adults to fannying about with croquet on the terrace. First impressions? Spot on. I felt like we’d stumbled into a secret hug from holiday gods.

But the real magic? Getting properly lost. Anglesey’s got those hidden gems you only find by accident, and with the house as our base, we wandered off the beaten track daily. One afternoon, aiming for a quick beach stroll, we took a wrong turn down a skinny lane near Llanlliana. Ended up at this secluded cove – not a soul in sight, just turquoise waves lapping at pebbly shores and seals popping up like nosy neighbours. We picnicked on pasties from a nearby farm shop, laughing as the kids built epic sandcastles. Pure bliss, no tourists trampling the vibe.

Another day, faffing about on footpaths from Cemaes, we veered off-piste and discovered an old smugglers’ path snaking to a forgotten headland. Wildflowers everywhere, gulls wheeling overhead, and a bench with a view that stopped us in our tracks. I sat there, cuppa in hand, reflecting on how I’m always chasing the ‘perfect’ itinerary back home, yet here, getting lost was the best plan. It’s a gentle nudge, isn’t it? Sometimes the detours gift you the memories.

Evenings back at the house, we’d fire up the range for a roast, kids shattered from garden shenanigans, us adults with a glass of wine on the balcony, plotting the next aimless ramble. A stone’s throw away, we stumbled on a tucked-away café in Llanbadrig doing the creamiest crab sandwiches – who knew? No big attractions, just these off-radar spots that felt like ours alone. Anglesey’s like that: whisper it, don’t shout it. Our week of luxurious downtime and happy accidents? Can’t wait to get lost there again.
