About Barmouth
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday spot near Barmouth – we’d packed the car with enough crisps and tea bags to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck us down a narrow farm track that turned into a muddy quagmire after a sneaky shower. There I was, white-knuckling the wheel while my other half yelled directions from a soggy map app, convinced we’d end up in someone’s cow field. But we made it, emerging onto this gorgeous working farm tucked between Dolgellau and Bala, with the hills rolling out like a proper Welsh postcard. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight – that private hot tub gleaming under the patio, and views stretching to the mountain ranges that had me grinning like an idiot before we’d even unpacked.

The place was spot-on for us: a cosy barn conversion sleeping four, with a cracking open-plan living area, a modern kitchen where I bodged a full English without burning it, and a king bedroom plus sofa bed that meant we weren’t tripping over each other. The bathroom’s a riot of colour, bath and shower in one, perfect for thawing out after a hike. We arrived buzzing with anticipation – I’d been dreaming of those far-reaching vistas towards Aran Fawddwy and Cadair Idris, ready to lace up my boots and conquer the lot.

Day one dawned crisp and clear, so we hit the trails straight away. A gentle wander up the farm tracks took us into South Snowdonia’s heart, past bleating lambs and wildflowers nodding in the breeze. We pushed on to a loop around Rhobell Fawr’s foothills – nothing too strenuous, just enough to feel alive, with eagles (or were they buzzards?) wheeling overhead. Picnicked on the patio that evening, al fresco with cheese and wine, star-gazing till our necks ached. Pure bliss.

Then the British weather did its thing. Next morning, the sky turned that moody grey, and the heavens opened. Our planned stomp up Aran Benllyn? Scrubbed. Instead, we improvised with a soggy yomp along the lower paths near the farm – puddles everywhere, my socks squelching like wet sponges. Laughing through the downpour, we ducked into a sheep shelter for a brew from the flask, pretending we were hardy explorers. It was miserable in the best way, forcing us to slow down and chat about nothing much. By afternoon, it cleared just enough for a sneaky sunset hike towards Cadair Idris’ base – mist clinging to the peaks, rain-fresh air that tasted like freedom.

One rainy evening, hot-tubbing under the drizzle (because why not?), I had a proper moment of reflection. Here I was, mid-40s, faffing about in wellies instead of my desk chair, and it hit me: these weather-whipped walks, good or grim, are what recharge the batteries. No grand adventures needed – just hills, a bit of humour, and each other. We left fitter, happier, and plotting our return. If you fancy a tranquil Welsh reset, this is your spot.
