About Barmouth
I’ll never forget the drive to Barmouth – a proper Welsh adventure from the off. We’d piled into the car in Shrewsbury, kids buzzing in the back with crisps and iPads, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal. About halfway, just past Dolgellau, we hit a massive pothole that sent us all lurching. “Watch it!” yelled my husband from the driver’s seat, as the hubcap went pinging into the hedge. Classic us – turning a simple journey into a comedy of errors. But by the time we rolled into that stunning North Wales coast spot, with Snowdonia’s peaks looming like old mates waving hello, all was forgiven. The anticipation built as we wound down the lane to our self-catering cottage – a cosy detached number for four, right on the doorstep of the Coastal Path, with its own enclosed garden and a private hot tub that screamed relaxation.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Perched with those jaw-dropping views over the sea and mountains, and just a short stroll to a long sandy beach, it felt like we’d stumbled into paradise. Walking distance to Tal-y-bont’s pub and shop too – perfect for nipping out for a pint or milk. We dumped the bags, cracked open a brew, and hit the Coastal Path straight away, the sea air hitting us like a tonic.

Day one was a dream: blue skies, not a cloud in sight. We tackled the Barmouth Bridge walk first – that iconic viaduct stretching over the Mawddach estuary, trains rumbling alongside as gulls wheeled overhead. The views back to the castle ruins at Harlech were epic, and the kids raced ahead, pretending they were explorers. We pushed on along the cliff tops, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, ending up windswept and grinning on the beach for fish and chips from a takeaway. “This is living,” I thought, toes in the sand.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, doesn’t it? Next morning, we woke to lashing rain, the mountains shrouded in mist like they’d pulled the duvet over their heads. Our big Snowdonia hike? Scrubbed. Instead, we embraced the soggy chaos with wellies and hoods, sloshing along the lower Coastal Path towards Barmouth town. The quirky shops and cafes were a godsend – we ducked into a tearoom for Welsh cakes and hot chocolate, laughing as water dripped from our noses. It turned into one of those perfect rainy-day rambles, puddles splashing everywhere, spotting seals bobbing offshore.

By afternoon, the clouds parted just enough for a gentle loop back via the beach, the hot tub waiting like a hero’s reward. Steaming under the stars that night, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection: holidays aren’t about flawless plans, are they? It’s the weather’s curveballs that make the memories – the good days soaring high, the grim ones huddling close. We did it all again the next day: sun for clifftop strides, drizzle forcing detours to Tal-y-bont’s cosy pub for a ploughman’s. Those walks, rain or shine, stitched the trip together. Barmouth’s paths are magic like that – they pull you in, weather be dashed. Can’t wait to go back.
