About Barmouth
I finally made it to Barmouth after that daft little detour on the A493 – took a wrong turn near Friog thanks to my rubbish sense of direction and ended up faffing about on a single-track lane with sheep eyeballing me like I was the intruder. But honestly, as the sun dipped low over Cardigan Bay that late summer afternoon, all that stress melted away. I'd been buzzing about this trip for weeks, picturing lazy days by the sea before the autumn chill really set in, and pulling up to our self-catering Tywyn cottage with its hot tub and those jaw-dropping views over the Dysynni Valley towards the bay felt like striking gold. Rural, peaceful spot in Snowdonia National Park, no traffic noise – just the gentle hum of the wind and distant waves. First impressions? Spot on. The place screamed luxury without trying too hard, and I was already plotting my evening soak.

Late summer here is pure magic, isn't it? The days still stretch out warm and golden, with that soft light that makes everything look like a postcard. We wasted no time unpacking and heading out for a stroll down to Tywyn beach, just a few miles away – the sand was still baking underfoot from the midday sun, and the sea was that perfect shimmering blue you'd swim in if you weren't a bit of a wally about cold water like me. I dipped a toe and yelped – bracing, but invigorating. Back at the cottage, firing up the hot tub as the evening cooled was genius; bubbles and valley views while the sky turned all pink and orange. It's that time of year when the tourists thin out, so we had the place practically to ourselves, paddling along the shore picking up shells and watching gulls swoop for their tea.

Next morning, the seasonal shift snuck up lovely – a crisp edge to the air that had me reaching for a light jumper, but the sun broke through misty valleys like it was putting on a show just for us. We wandered over to Aberdyfi, nipping into a café for bacon butties and proper Welsh cakes, still warm from the oven. The tide was out low, exposing all those wiggly patterns in the sand, and we pottered about the dunes, breathing in that salty, heather-scented breeze. Afternoon brought a bit of that classic Welsh drizzle – not enough to ruin things, just a fine mist that made the hillsides glow emerald. Cosy inside with the wood burner flickering (late summer perks: optional fires!), we cooked up a feast of local crab from Tywyn's market – fresh as anything, thanks to the bay's bounty before the weather turns properly autumnal.

One evening, we even drove the short hop to our private beach access three miles off – empty stretch of pebbles and waves lapping under a harvest moon rising fat over the valley. Sat there with a flask of tea, reflecting on how I never slow down at home. This trip, with its fading summer warmth giving way to those first hints of cosiness, reminded me life's too short not to chase these pockets of peace. No regrets about the mishap en route; it was the perfect start to a holiday shaped by the season's gentle handover. If you're after that sweet spot before the leaves turn, get yourself here – you won't want to leave.
