About Barmouth
From the off, I was all about doing sod all, and this place was made for it. No grand plans, just lazy cottage days stretching out like the tide below. I'd flop in the garden with a book – some daft crime novel that had me chuckling at the detective's mishaps – while the waves whispered crash after crash. The sun would dip behind the hills, painting everything gold, and I'd think, "This is it, innit? Proper slowing down." That hot tub became my personal spa; bubbling away with a cold beer from the on-site farm shop, watching gulls wheel overhead. Speaking of which, that farm shop is a gem – stocked to the gills with local cheeses, fresh breads, cracking wines, and pies that could make you weep. Popped in for a coffee and cake from their little café-bar most mornings, chatting with the locals about nothing much. It's right there on site, so no effort required. A gentle wander to the beach via the private path was as energetic as I got. Feet in the pebbles, staring out to sea, letting the mind wander. One afternoon, I managed a saunter to Llwyngwril village – five minutes away – for a pint at the pub, but even that felt like overkill. The garden was my kingdom: lounger under the apple trees, dozing off to the hum of bees, waking to refuel on farm shop treats. Self-reflection hit me there, mid-yawn: life's rush back home? Pointless. Here, time stretched lazy-like, no emails pinging, just the joy of bugger all. I did dip a toe into Fairbourne's sandy beach once, a mile or so up the coast, for an ice cream and a paddle, but mostly? Blissful inertia. Evenings were hot tub heaven, stars popping out over the mountains, a glass of Welsh wine in hand. No cycling epics or cliff railways for this lot – though they're all nearby if you're that way inclined. Me? I savoured the slow burn of doing very little, recharging proper. If you're after a holiday to reset the soul, this corner of Wales delivers. Utterly restorative. Can't wait to go back and perfect the art of nowt. |
